STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

My name is K.M. Moshiur Rahman Songlap, and I am a citizen of Bangladesh currently working
for Energy Chemical Industry Ltd. as an Assistant Engineer.

The urge to aim high always drove me towards science from an early age and its implications
have always fascinated me and seemed like more of a miracle to me. From my childhood, I
always keen to know about technology and love to involve with it. Most of the time, I was busy
to build something new with useless electrical components. From that point of view, I decided to
participate in a science fair when I was a student at school. From then, I fell in love with the
Science project. However, I could not find any success for four years. It was in 2012 finally, I
was able to break all barriers and became champion at the National Science Fair. The journey
was not easy; you know Bangladesh is a third world country. As well as, at that time Google and
YouTube was not as popular as now. I had to find someone, from whom I can learn about the
application of technological devices. Then I felt that I have to do something for the next
generation who wants to do something exceptional with the help of science and technology.
After that, I took the initiative to found a science club by my own effort, for school and college
students. Through all these things I got my desired goal and it was robotics. When I sought
amongst our country's limited educational resources to find any robotic subject for my higher
studies, I found none, so I choose to enroll in the electrical and electronics engineering program
at American International University-Bangladesh for it housed the largest department of
engineering in the country. However, I did not lose my hope on robotics and I always focused
on picking up-skills by building small multitasking and problem-solving robots and projects
using microcontrollers. I also share my knowledge with young students of my science club at
that moment my agenda was to build a robotics society by the blessing of science and
technology. In my second year at university, I qualified for my university’s robotics team AIUB
Robotic Crew. We work hard to build a Mars rover from limited facilities. As well as, I
expanded my knowledge in this field studying books by “Beers and Johnston”, designed 3D
rover models and performed simulations using SolidWorks. I participated in University Rover
Challenge-2018 held in Utah, USA. The competition was organized by The Mars Society USA.
That time I was feeling the heavenly happiness of robotics. In the same year, I had to face a
heartbreaking moment; my father was affected by brain stroke and got paralyzed. His lower body
was affected most and he could not walk, he had to move by wheelchair. At that moment I was
thinking that how could he become able to stand and walk. Meanwhile, I made a plan if I use my
robotics knowledge to build a robotic leg for the paralyzed person then they can able to walk
again. After that, I choose this complex topic for my final year thesis- project. By the hard work
and noticeable determination, we were able to make an assistive exoskeleton for paralyzed
people. I also published a paper at IEEE conference (ICREST-2019). In the meantime, I also
took part in several types of inter-university robotics competitions and hackathon on robotics
idea implementation as well. I always want to take challenge. Now, I prefer to work for disabled
people. For that reason, I added Biomedical Instrumentation Measurement and Design course in
my bachelor’s degree.

Biomedical engineering is an applied subject where I will study methods and processes in
medical technology, microsystems technology, and medical informatics and also focuses on
signal processing, medical imaging, and prosthetic devices that are related to engineering
program background. Biomedical engineering is the application of engineering principles and
design concepts to medicine and biology for healthcare purposes (e.g. diagnostic or therapeutic).
This field seeks to close the gap between engineering and medicine, combining the design and
problem-solving skills of engineering with medical and biological sciences to advance health
care treatment, including diagnosis and monitoring. My goal is to work as a researcher at a
leading research laboratory or pursue the job of a faculty position offered at a prestigious
university.

The quality of higher education in Germany is among the best in the world. Germany itself has
become synonymous with high quality. The long tradition of education in Germany is widely
respected. A degree from its top universities automatically marks the international student as one
of the best. This is all the more applicable in the fields of science and engineering for which
Germany is famous.

The international environments of “Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg” securing

industry collaborations are surely attractive for any engineering student. The enriched “Medical
System Engineering” course outline offering a wide variety of topics including biomedical image
and signal processing, machine learning, fluid mechanic, biomedical instrumentation along with
high lab facilities left me astonished.

So with the knowledge, I possess and desire to learn more make this course a natural choice for
me. I am sure that M.Sc. at your esteemed university will widen the horizons of my knowledge
and help me attain a milestone in my professional career. I am confident that M.Sc. program in
“Medical System Engineering” at “Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg” will provide
me with a great opportunity to bridge between my dream and reality.

I would like to end by saying that challenges before a person is a test of character, some succeed
some do not, I would like to be the former.

Thankfully,

K.M. Moshiur Rahman Songlap
