UG-84

CHARPY IMPACT TESTS

a. GENERAL
Scope:
 Weldments
 All materials for shells, heads, nozzles and other vessel parts
 Requirement of Impact test governed by Subsection C
b. TEST PROCEDURES
1. Test procedure and apparatus as per SA-370 or ISO 148 Parts 1, 2 and 3
2. Minimum impact test temperature=Minimum metal design temperature
Exception as per Table UG 84.4

Where applicable for Part UCS materials, the impact test temperature may be adjusted
in accordance with UG-84(b) (2) and Table UG-84.4.
Test temperature may be colder than minimum specified in ASME Section II
c. TEST SPECIMENS
1. 3 specimens per test
2. Nominal thickness ≥ 11mm: Standard 10mm X 10mm specimen
Charpy V notch type UG-84
2.a Exceptions to usage of 10mm X 10mm specimens for Material thickness ≥ 11mm:
 Applicable for materials that have absorbed energy in excess of 240J, when tested
using 10mm X 10mm specimens at specified testing temperature
 10mm X 6.7mm specimens may be used in lieu of full size specimens
Acceptance: 100J minimum for each specimen
Lateral expansion in mils shall be reported
3. Material from which full size 10mm X 10mm specimens cannot be obtained:
 Limitation can be material shape or thickness
 Specimen shall be :
