C ollege d i s t r i c t was made b y t h e P r e s i d e n t , D r . B a s i l

P eterso n , and v i c e - p r e s i d e n t , D r. James T h o r n to n , to

determ ine the c o u r s e s o f s t u d y t o b e o f f e r e d b y t h e new

co lleg e. When t h e O r a n g e C o a s t C o l l e g e - was f o u n d e d i n

grow ing s e c t i o n s of Southern C a lif o r n ia i t was f e l t th at

a course in g e n eral B u ild in g tra d e s was e sse n tia l to a

w e ll rounded v o c a tio n a l program .

o f V o c a t i o n a l E d u c a t i o n a n d Mr. L o u i s A n d e r s o n , c o u n t 3r

d i r e c t o r o f V o c a t i o n a l and A p p r e n t i c e t r a i n i n g , i t was

d e c i d e d t o o f f e r a B u i l d i n g T ra d e s c o u r s e t h a t would c o n t a i n

The a u t h o r was a s k e d t o s e t up a c o m p l e t e c o u r s e o f

study to cover each of th ese f i e l d s and p rovide a teach in g

g u id e to m eet th e n eeds o f t h i s p a r t i c u l a r s e c t i o n of the

course.

The p u r p o s e o f t h e s e job s h e e ts i s to p ro v id e th e

stu d en t w ith a d d itio n a l tr a in in g a id s. It is the in ten t

of the a u th o r to cover th e v a rio u s phases of the rough

c a rp e n try d uring th e lec tu re and l a b o r a t o r y p e r i o d s a llo tte d

to c a rp e n try . . A ll the b a sic in fo rm atio n covering th e types

o f l u m b e r t o be u s e d , v a rio u s m etal f a s t e n e r s , and t e c h n i c a l

in fo rm atio n n ecessary is to com plete th e s t u d e n t s ’ u n d e r s ta n d ­

in g of each phase of c o n s tr u c tio n . Each o f th e s t e p s w i l l

be c o v e re d i n d e t a i l in th e l e c t u r e room a s w e l l a s the

lab o ra to ry . M o d e l s o f e a c h p h a s e wri l l be p r e s e n t e d and

d i s c u s s e d by t h e s t u d e n t s . A ll types of v is u a l a id s w ill

be em ployed to e n a b le t h e s tu d e n t to b e t t e r u n d e rsta n d the

s te p b ein g d isc u sse d .
