SECTION 5 (a)

AIR WASHER
AIR WASHER

Design / Constructional Features

Air Washer System consists of the following :

· Air intake louvre

· Auto viscous filter or Panel filters
· Air distribution plate
· Spray set
· Moisture eliminator
· Fan
· Pump
· Piping, valves, strainers

Air Washers are generally used for evaporative cooling and humidification. It is
mostly used in Textile Mills, Power plants, Metallurgical Industries and other
industrial application. Air washer can be of masonry construction or sheet metal
construction.

Function of air intake louvre is to have a first hand protection of the system
from external dust and storm etc. It also protects the system from rain water.

Filters are provided to supply clean air into the system. Type of filter is
determined depending on type of industries / applications.

Air distribution plate ensure smooth and uniform flow of air across spray
sections.

Spray set inject atomized water particle across air stream. Thus, evaporative
cooling and humidification takes place.
Starting Instruction

· Check all valves for readiness to start the unit.

· Check water quantity in the supmp of air washer. If water quantity is found
to be inadequate, the valve provided in Quick fill line need to be opened for
filling up the sump upto overflow level. Close the quick fill valve.

Note : Float valve is provided in make-up line for regular make-up water
supply. The valve provided in make-up line shall remain open partically.

· Start Fan and adjust damper provided at outlet of fan to get desired air
quantity. Position of damper adjustment lever need to be locked with the
help of a knob.
· Before starting re-circulating water pump, please ensure that the valve
provided in suction are open and the valve in discharge line is closed.
· Start the pump and adjust flow of water by throttling the valve in discharge
line.

Note : Please refer starting instruction for fan and pump which are shown
separately.

Maintenance
All items other than pump, fan and Filter are stationary. For Pump, Filters and
Fan refer respective sections.

Air Intake Louvre, Air Distribution Plate and Moisture Eliminator does not require
any special maintenance except the fact that general cleanliness need to be
maintained.

For Spray Set, the holes of spray nozzles get choked with dirt available in
water. Once nozzles are partially or fully choked, water atomisation process is
disturbed. This can be easily identified by viewing through inspection door /
window in spray section. Choked nozzles must be removed, manually cleaned
and to be reinstalled in position.

Strainer elements need to be inspected periodically and dust particle collected

have to be removed manually. Choked strainers create high pressure drop in
pipeline resulting in insufficient water supply to spray nozzles by pump. Hence,
regular check up of strainers are essential for healthy performance of the
system.
