Lifting Calculations Project

Marbella, October 17th of 2019

1
Lifting Project

Is required to calculate que crane dimensions and capacity, to move tubes from a metal
box to a close location.

The operation requires to lift the tubes vertically, with a length of 16 meters, inside a box
with a deep of 28m. One of the biggest constraints of the project is the maximum height hoist of
the mobile crane. The minimum vertical lift height it must be 46 meters, with a safety range of
2m.

Using the 46 meters as a starting point, I choose to work with Liebherr mobile cranes, due
to quality, functionability and availability around the world. Noel recommended me review the
150 and 250 Ton models.

LTM 1160-5.2 has a capacity of 180 Ton, Liebherr doesn’t manufacture a 150T mobile
crane).

To calculate the feasibility of the project, I identified the corners of the metal box, to
evaluate the most difficult situation to move the tubes. The parking is bigger than the area of the
mobile crane, I decided to evaluate 3 parking scenarios, top, middle and bottom. All the
calculations were made from the rotational axis of the crane.

Rotational axis is available in the specifications of the Crane, it’s 9.5 meters from the
front side and 4.5m from the back.

The following table, has been created to evaluate the horizontal distance between the
rotation axis on the crane and the 4 corners of the box, A, B, C and D. The distance is calculated
using trigonometry, L1 and L2 are the legs and H, hypotenuse of the triangle. Units in meters.

The combination that generates the closer distance, with the furthest point is parking the crane
backwards on the top side.

At 30.5 meters of horizontal reach, the LTM 1160-5.2 provides a vertical reach of 54m,
the chart is available in the machine’s specification document, page 24.

The lifting capacity chart is in the page 12, at maximum reach 62 meters, the crane can
lift up to 2.1 Ton, while tube’s weight 384 Kg, just a 1/5 of maximum lifting capacity, with a
horizontal distance of 30 meters. The counterweight selected is 10 Ton.

Strictly Confidential 5
After analyzing the results, the LTM 1160-5.2 is capable of moving the tubes, but it’s
over dimensioned, reason why I repeat the calculations with the 90 Ton crane, the LTM 1090-
4.2.

From the back side to the rotation axis, the distance is 4 meters approx., the calculations
were made parking the crane backwards on 3 different positions. As the first part, the best
combination is parking on the top of the parking area.

with a counterweight of 7.4 Ton, at maximum reach 60 m., the crane is capable to lift 1.6 Ton,
equal to 4 tubes at the same time

Strictly Confidential 7
As marked in the following chart, the crane at the worst scenario, at maximum
reach is capable of lifting up to 52 meters, a 10% above our expectations. Being the the LTM
1090-4.2 the best mobile crane for the requirements.
