Dear students, the Reading “Pathways from Deglobalisation: Colombian Business Groups, 1950-
1985” shows us the path in which the internationalization of the economy has took place within
the country. Of course, it is quite common to hear that we are in an era of globalization. Now,
you can say Yonni is crazy pointing out the deglobalization concept.

This activity has as goal to discuss what does mean globalization for emerging economies such
as Colombia. In addition, you can compare between you own country and what happens with
Colombia during the various periods of time that we review.

1. Which are the main characteristics of the largest Colombian business groups between
1950 and 1985? Please check these characteristics today, do they exist? Do they
evolve?
2. How the Industrialization by Substitution of Imports influence the Colombian business
groups? How this policy is related with deglobalization or globalization
3. What are the main business focus of the 25 largest business groups in Colombia? Are
these groups especialized in one sector? Do they attend various sectors?
4. What is the role of geographical diversification in terms of generating international
trade from these business groups in Colombia?
5. Today, what we can say about the role of largest business group in Colombia and their
influence in generating eras of deglobalization and/or globalization.
