Analysis short story The Necklace

1. Settings
a. Place
The story takes place in France.
b. Time
This story is set in about the late 1800s or early 1900s.
c. Atmosphere
At the end of the story, the atmosphere was sad, despair, regrets, and resentful, because when
Mathilde lost the necklace, she knew that she must pay for what she's done. they range from
regret to fiery feeling to working hard to raise money to buy the jewelry.

2. Character
The story has three main characters: Mathilde Loisel, Monsieur Loisel, and Madame
Forestier.
Mathilde, the main character, is beautiful and social, and she wants expensive things to suit
her sophisticated tastes. But she is born into a clerk's family and ends up marrying another
employee, so she can't afford the clothes, accessories, and household items she wants, which
makes her unhappy.
Monsieur Loisel, Mathilde's husband, is a man of simple pleasures who is happy with his
life. She loves Mathilde and tries to reduce her unhappiness by inviting her to lavish parties.
Madame Forestier is Mathilde's friend. She is a rich woman, which makes Mathilde very
jealous.

3. Theme
The theme of this short story involves the trap of pride. Mathilde's pride in her beauty
prompted her to buy expensive dresses and borrow seemingly expensive jewelry, which
sparked her downfall. She fed her pride for one night but paid for it for 10 years of hardship,
which destroyed her beauty. Pride also prevents her friend from admitting initially that the
necklace is fake, which will prevent Mathilda from falling.
