Traditional vs digital

Research notes

What is camera film? And are there different ones?

Camera film is made up of light-sensitive emulsion coated on a flexible base. There are four types of camera film:
black and white, infrared, colour negative and colour positive.

What is an SD card? And are there different ones?

An SD card is a type of memory card typically used in digital cameras and other portable devices. You can get
SD cards in various sizes, the more GB a card has, the higher the amount of storage is.

Why is a dark room needed to develop film photography?

A dark room is used in order to avoid light reaching the sensitive emulsions on the light sensitive paper. if light
does reach the paper, the images will appear overexposed.

Describe the process for taking a picture on Digital

Like traditional cameras, digital images are captured on a light sensitive screen using a camera. The sensor in a
digital camera has millions of pixels, each of which make up a light sensitive photocell, this cell generates a tiny
electrical current in response to light. Images are captured on digital files and stored on removable media cards.
Unlike film, cards are reusable and can be transferred anywhere, copied and erased.

List the key advantages of digital cameras

❖ You can view the image instantly and then decide if you want to keep or erase it.
❖ Digital image manipulation using computer software can be easily done which makes changes
to the image easier to do.
❖ Digital cameras work a lot faster and are less expensive in the long term.
❖ Digital cameras have massive amounts of photo storage
❖ Eliminates the need for film processing

List the key advantages of traditional cameras

❖ There can be a lower initial cost for a film camera compared to a digital camera.
❖ Film delivers a higher dynamic range, which makes it better at capturing detail in white and
black.
❖ Film photography tends to be more forgiving of minor focusing issues and exposure problems.
❖ A film camera often has a higher resolution than what is found in most digital cameras.

What are the features on modern mobile phones for photography? compare two phones and
write these down. (e.g. Samsung, Apple, Huawei etc.)

megapixel wide 2PD AF f/1.5-f/2.4 OIS, 12-megapixel telephoto f/2.1 OIS
and a VGA 3D depth camera.
- Front: 10-megapixel 2PD AF f/2.2 selfie camera which has a night mode.

What are your opinions on the image quality? Write your thoughts on image sharpness,
exposure (how well the lightness and darkness works in the image) , colour, size of image.
Samsung Galaxy Note 10+

Very high-level quality image. The contrast is quite high which allows
the warm temperature to be more apparent. As the photo has most
likely been taken during sunset the exposure is low. The image is very
sharp, the minor details such as the windows on the buildings and the
leaves on the trees can be easily seen without blur. The size of the
image is 1920x1920 which is quite large, yet the quality of the image
has still been kept. The orange and red tones of the image creates a
sense of warmth within the image.

Huawei P30 Pro

Another high quality image. Unlike the Samsung image, this photograph
presents more blue and green tones which create a colder appearance.
This image utilises the camera's low light assets meaning the exposure
is low. This image is also very sharp and minor details such as the
rocks and lights can be easily seen. The contrast in this image is
minimal compared to the first image creating a softer look. The size of
the image is 1280x960 making the image smaller than the first making
the quality a little higher.
