THE PENCIL
A pencil is a very essential tool in life, whether in academics, arts, daily journal, and
other basic life circumstances that require a writing tool. Aside from its purpose, its
physical features are very interesting too. Its outer layer is made of wood, crafted to
become slim and shiny, and has a tiny eraser at the bottom end. Meanwhile, its core had a
graphite powder, the most important component of a pencil. Though the features of a
pencil seem to be so simple, comparing one’s life into it can be so meaningful.
I am that child. Like a normal pencil, I am manufactured with a purpose. My
personal goal is to be a professional who diagnoses, treats and assists individuals who
experience psychological distress and can’t figure out ways to continue living. With that
burning passion, I also need a room for improvement. To be the best, I know I have to
experience a painful sharpening. This involves academically challenging tasks, written and
practical examination, and skills enhancement. Moreover, I am just a human being who
commits mistakes, but I believe a human being has intelligence. Similar to a pencil’s eraser,
my God’s given intelligence enables me to do something to correct that mistake. Going
back to the pencil’s internal feature, I have mentioned the graphite powder as the most
important thing, similar to my self-identity. I have experienced a lot of misjudgments from
other people, and a lot of pessimistic people surround me. A pencil has a higher possibility
of being broken whenever it is mishandled. Likewise, I can be broke sometimes, this usually
happens whenever I have wrong decisions. But I believe that the most important feature of
my life is my perception about my true self. Let’s say people are like pencils. They can be
more colorful, they can have more advanced features, they can be someone’s favorite, they
can be the most beautiful pencil, or they can have permanent tints like a ballpen. But they

can never be me. I value my self because God manufactured me to be like this. Isn't it
beautiful to have a pencil inspired life? I can continue making marks in this world. Sooner
or later, I can help other people too. In God’s grace I knew I would make it, and leaving
those marks will be my greatest legacy.
