Kingdom Animalia Webquest
Kingdom Animalia Webquest
Kingdom Animalia Webquest
Introduction: Kingdom Animalia is the largest of the kingdom’s of life with around 2 million species. While there are 35 phyla in the kingdom, they can be divided
into two broad categories, invertebrates and vertebrates. There are 9 major phyla in kingdom Animalia that represent the majority of the animal species. Eight
of the phyla represent invertebrates and range from microscopic worms to giant squid. The vertebrates are found in one phylum of animal life, Chordata. You
can type in the links for each website or you can open document from my website – Biology 1B folder, Animal Kingdom WebQuest. Good Luck
Procedure:
1. Use the Earthlife website ( https://www.earthlife.net/inverts/an-phyla.html )to research the types of animals found in each of the invertebrate phyla
listed below. Write a brief summary of each. You may use other resources but use the virtual zoo to get you started.
INVERTEBRATE COMMON NAME NUMBER ETYMOLOGY/NAM MAJOR PHYLUM CHARACTERISTICS- ANATOMY, FEEDING METHOD,
PHYLUM & EXAMPLES OF SPECIES E MEANING MOVEMENT, REPRODUCTION, ETC.
Porifera
Cnidaria
Platyhelminthe

Nematoda
Mollusca
Annelida
Arthropoda
Echinodermata
2. Use the https://www.ck12.org/na/Ani-Phylum-Chordata-1/lesson/Phylum-Chordata-xi-biology/ website to answer the following questions about
chordates:
a. How many species of chordates are there? ___________________________
b. There are four traits that define the chordate phylum. Describe each below.
TRAIT DESCRIPTION
Post-anal tail
Dorsal hollow nerve cord
Notochord
Pharyngeal (gill) slits
c. Read the paragraph about the characteristics of chordates. Other than the four traits from the chart above, what are at least five other traits
that all chordates share?
i. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________
ii. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________
iii. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________
iv. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________
v. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Urochordata
Cephalochordata
Vertebrata
4. Answer the questions below using the cladogram of Phylum Chordata:
a. Which traits do all animals In Phylum Chordata share?
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
b. How is Subphylum Cephalochordata different from Suphylum Urochordata?
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
c. Which traits separate Subphylum Cephalochordata from Class Agnatha?
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
d. Which traits separate lampreys & hagfish from sharks, rays, and skates?
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
e. Which traits separate bony fish from frogs, lizards, birds, and mammals?
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
5. Go back to the site you used in 2, https://www.ck12.org/na/Ani-Phylum-Chordata-1/lesson/Phylum-Chordata-xi-biology/ and complete the chart about
the vertebrate classes. Use Google or Bing to search if you can’t find an answer.
