LANGUAGE AND COMMUNICATION

Lesson 3. Communication Processes, Principles and Ethics

Objectives :

At the end of the lesson you should be able to:

✓ identify the variables involved in the communication process;
✓ explain the various communication models and how they help in understanding
the communication process;
✓ evaluate the written speech as to the principles of effective oral and written
communication; and
✓ make a Communication Model in different context.

Introduction:
In the previous discussion, you learned about the types of communication
mode, context, and purpose and style. In this lesson, you will review the nature
of the communication process and some important communication models.

Why is it important that you know the communication models? You will
realize their importance because they will help you understand how a
communication process works. It is only by knowing the flow of communication
that you will be able to make the communication process effective.

Analysis :

1. From the activity, who is the source of the information?

2. Do you consider yourself as the source of the information? Why?
3. What is the medium that you used in sending the information? Are you sure its effective?
4. Do you think the receiver of the information will take actions on it? Why?
5. Do you think that you send the information to the right person?

Abstraction :

UNDERSTANDING COMMUNICATION
A famous quote says - “The way we communicate with others and with
ourselves ultimately determines the quality of our lives”

The process of passing any information from one person to the other person
with the aid of some medium is termed as communication.

The first party who sends the information is called the sender and the
second party who receives the information, decodes the information and
accordingly responds is called the receiver or the recipient. Thus, in simpler terms
communication is simply a process where the sender sends the information to the
receiver for him to respond.

THE COMMUNICATION PROCESS

Please go through the diagram below:

Parry (Sender)
(Content - Can be some information, data, diagram, analysis, report)

(Information)↓ ↑(Feedback)

Peter (Receiver)
(Decodes the information, understands the information and responds)

The above diagram goes a long way to explain the communication process.

Communication process is a simple process where a message is being

transferred from a sender to the receiver. The receiver after receiving the message
understands the message in the desired form and then acts accordingly.

THE PROCESS OF SENDING THE MESSAGE

The first party or the sender first thinks of information, whatever he intends
to communicate or transfer to the others. Then he puts the information or the
message in words or prepare a content. The process of putting the thoughts in
words is called encoding. Finally, the content after being ready is transmitted to
the receiver.

THE PROCESS OF RECEIVING THE MESSAGE

The message reaches the sender, who then decodes the message or in
simpler terms breaks the information, understands it and responds to the receiver.
The sender also gives feedback to the receiver after he has understood the
complete information. Communication in simpler terms is a process of passing
the information from the first party (sender) to the second party (receiver).
Communication plays a vital role not only in organizations or one’s professional
career but also is essential in day to day life.

COMMUNICATION MODEL
There are many conceptual models for human communication but in this
lesson, you will be exposed to only four: (1) Aristotle’s model; (2) Laswell’s model;
(3) Shannon-Weaver’s model; and (4) David Berlo’s model o0f communication.
Why is it important that you know the communication models? You will
realize their importance because they will help you understand how a
communication process works. It is only by knowing the flow of communication
that you will be able to make the communication process effective.
A model is often abstract. It is a representation of a real-world phenomenon
applied to different forms. The interplay of variables in the model is represented
graphically. Try to assess later what comprises the communication models and
what variables are common to each of them.
There are many conceptual models for human communication but in this
lesson, you will be exposed to only four: (1) Aristotle’s model; (2) Laswell’s model;
(3) Shannon-Weaver’s model; and (4) David Berlo’s model o0f communication.

ARISTOTLE’S COMMUNICATION MODEL

Classical rhetoric dates back to ancient Greece during the time of Plato,
Aristotle, and the Greek Sophists who were great rhetoricians. Effective public
speaking was an important consideration in the study of communication. They
were good at argumentation and debate and speech was characterized by
repartee.
Aristotle emphasized that there are three variables in the communication
process: speaker, speech, and audience as illustrated in the communication flow
below:

Note that the speaker variable here is very important. Without the speaker,
there will be no speech to be produced. Depending on the profile of the audience,
the speaker adjusts his/her speech. Some consideration for the audience
demographics is age, sex, background, culture, race, religion, gender, social, and
economic status, and political orientation or inclination, among others. Even
beliefs, views, and attitude also play an important role when talking about
audience consideration since oftentimes, the audience bring these with them
when they decode a message in any given situation.

LASWELL’S COMMUNICATION MODEL

In 1948, Harold Dwight Laswell described communication as being
focused on the following Ws: Who says What in Which channel to Whom and
with What effect as seen in the model below:

The whole process of communication begins with the communicator (who)

sending out a message (what) using a medium (in which channel) for a receiver
(to whom) experiencing an effect 9with what effect) afterwards. The process may
be analyzed through the content sent, the medium used, as well as the effect on
the recipient of the message.
While this model is similar to Aristotle’s in the sense that both are linear
and have the same components, Laswell’s also differs in that there are five
variables involved, with the addition of two: medium and effect.

SHANNON-WEAVER’S COMMUNICATION MODEL

Claude Elwood Shannon and Warren Weaver’s model of communication
was introduced in 1949, a year after Laswell’s for Bell Laboratories. Originally, it
was conceptualized for the functioning of the radio and television serving as a
model for technical communication and, later on, adopted in the field of
communication. In this model, other components such as noise, reception,
destination, and feedback have been identified. Other terms such as information
source for the sender, transmitter for the encoder, decoder (reception), and
receiver (destination) were introduced.

Could you explain the communication flow in the preceding model? How different is it
from the first two models discussed earlier?

BERLO’S COMMUNICATION MODEL

David Berlo’s model conceptualized in 1960 is probably the most well-

known among the communication models. Initially, Berlo’s model was called
SMCR which stands for sender of the message, sent through a channel or medium
to a receiver. However, it was modified later on to include noise, hence the
acronym SMCRN.

The major variables involved in the communication process are (1) source,
(2) message, (3) channel, and (4) receiver.

The source being the originator of the message acts as the encoder. As such,
the encoder should practice communication skills such as listening, speaking
reading, and writing. His/her attitude towards the audience or the subject as well
as his/her knowledge about the topic on hand likewise counts along with the
social system that he/she is in which includes values, beliefs and practices, and
culture.

The second variable which is message includes (1) content; (2) elements
such as the language used and gestures employed; (3) treatment or the manner by
which the message is transmitted; and (4) structure which refers to the
arrangement of parts or flow of the message. The code shows how the message is
sent: that is, the language (verbal code) used and the accompanying gestures (non-
verbal code) employed. Note that there should be no mismatch between the verbal
and non-verbal codes.

The third variable which is channel refers to the different senses: seeing,
hearing, smelling, tasting, and touching. Finally, the fourth variable is receiver,
the one who decodes the message. Note that the components of this last variable
are similar to those of the first since for communication to be effective, both the
source and the receiver should have good communication skills.

If you were to insert noise as an additional variable for SMCR, where do

you think will in fit?

GENERAL PRINCIPLES OF EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION

Since communication is a two-way process, it is important that you know

the principles to be observed to make it effective. For both oral and written
communication, you should be able to apply the following principles:

1. Know your purpose in communicating. Are you communicating basically to

inform, to entertain, or to persuade? While you may have more than one purpose,
there is still a more dominant objective or reason why you communicate.

2. Know your audience. In both speaking and writing, you should know your
audience as it will dictate the speaking or writing style you are going to employ.
Consider the age, educational background, professional, culture, and other salient
features of your listeners or readers.

3. Know your topic. You communicate essentially because you want to share
something. In speaking situations, speakers are invited because they have
something to share. This also applies writing. You write because you wish that
other people learn something from you. You may then utilize several or multiple
communication techniques to easily catch the attention of the audience.

4. Adjust your speech or writing to the context of the situation. The environment in
which your speech or writing is to be delivered determines the kind of language
you will use.

5. Work on the feedback given you. Once you receive comments from the
listeners/readers, work on them. Take kindly to criticisms. In the long run,
constructive criticisms will prove beneficial to you as you learn to address them.

PRINCIPLES OF EFFECTIVE ORAL COMMUNICATION

1. Be clear with your purpose. You should know by heart your objective in
communicating.

2. Be complete with the message you deliver. Make sure that your claims are
supported by facts and essential information.

3. Be concise. You do not need to be verbose or wordy with your statements. Brevity
in speech is a must.

4. Be natural with your delivery. Punctuates important words with the appropriate
gestures and movements. Exude a certain degree of confidence even if you do not
feel confident enough.

5. Be specific and timely with your feedback. Inputs are most helpful when provide
on time.

PRINCIPLE OF EFFECTIVE WRITTEN COMMUNICATION: THE 7Cs

1. Be clear. Be clear About your message. Always be guided by your purpose in
communicating.

2. Be concise. Always stick to the point and do not beat or run around the bush. Be
brief by focusing on your main point.

3. Be concrete. Support your claims with enough facts. Your readers will easily know
if you are bluffing or deceiving them because there is nothing to substantiate your
claims.

4. Be correct. It is important that you observe grammatical correctness in your

writing. Always have time to revise and edit your work. Even simple spelling
errors may easily distract your readers.

5. Be coherent. Your writing becomes coherent only when you convey a logical
message. The ideas should be connected to each other and related to the topic. Make
sure that you observe a sound structure that will present a smooth flow of your
ideas. Use transitional or cohesive devices so that the ideas cohere with one another.

6. Be complete. Include all necessary and relevant information so that the audience
will not be left wanting of any information. Always place yourself in the shoes of
the audience, who is always interested to receive new information.

7. Be courteous. The tone of your writing should be friendly. Avoid any

overtone/undertone or insinuation to eliminate confusion and misinterpretation.

ETHICS OF COMMUNICATION

Communication ethics emphasize that moral influence the behavior of an

individual, group, or organization thereby affecting their communication. For
instance, given the unethical communication practice of a certain company of
concealing the non-remittance of deducted premiums from employees’ salaries to
the SSS or the Social Security System (or GSIS or Government Service Insurance
System in the case of government offices), the company’s accountable to its
employees is undoubtedly affected compare this situation with that of an
organization that observes ethical practice and remits the employees’ monthly
contributions to the SSS or GSIS regularly. It is important to note that one’s
behavior should be regulated by honesty, decency, truthfulness, sincerity, and
moral uprightness.

Be guided by the following to achieve ethical communications:

1. Establish an effective value system that will pave the way for the development of
your integrity as a person. One’s behavior and decision-making style affect, in
turn, the operations of an organizations.

LOURDES L. BAUYA

EDUCATION DEPARTMENT

2. Provide complete and accurate information. Whether it is needed or not, the data you
provide should always be contextualized and correct.

3. Disclose vital information adequately and appropriately. Never conceal or hide

information that are necessary for purposes of transparency.

Observing a code of ethics is essentials as it determines the kind of behavior that is

proper and desirable over one that is displeasing and offensive. A code of ethics sets the
standards to be observed by a person or a company that will create a good reputation or
a positive image not only for an individual but also for the organization. It will, therefore,
pave the way for the attainment of the desired results leading to the success of an
individual or the entire company. Success in decision-making will likewise impact the
company’s reputation.

Task 2. Material Evaluation

A. Read the written speech of President Duterte.

Kindly sit down. Maraming salamat.

There’s a prepared speech for this afternoon.

To our brave soldiers who are with us today, I personally came here to thank you on behalf of the
Filipino people for your undying service, especially during these trying times.

As we fight the COVID-19 pandemic, lawless elements still take advantage of and ravage across
our land, disrupting public order.

Recently, it has been a difficult time for our men and women in uniform due to the escalating
tensions between the military and the terrorist groups. On top of this, we have the deaths of your
fellow soldiers where certain members of the Philippine National Police were involved.

As your Commander-in-Chief, I grieve for our fallen men. I convey my deepest condolences to you
for the death of your comrades.

I already tasked the National Bureau of Investigation to do justice by conducting an immediate

and impartial investigation to ferret out the truth. [Nandito ba ang NBI? Is the NBI here?]

It is my hope that this isolated incident will not spark any animosity between the Armed Forces of
the Philippines and the PNP.

Alam mo the imponderables of life hindi talaga natin makita nor can we project the future of what
things will happen or not happen.
kagustuhan natin.

Iyan ang gusto ng tao. But sometimes it can turn to something more than just what we ordinarily
expect. We don’t have the
answer for that. We know that there is a certain hatred or anger there, or if there is none, then a
misunderstanding that led to the shooting.

As your Commander-in-Chief and as President of the Republic of the Philippines, I assure you that
I will see to it that the truth will come out be it in favor of the police or the military. Ang hinihingi
ko lang ang totoong nangyari.

So you can rest assured that justice will be done to the family at sa mga tao dito sa — ang mga
tropa dito sa Jolo.

Remember that our progress as a nation has been for decades hindered by insurgency and
terrorism. That is why you have my utmost respect as you risk your lives in the name of peace,
security, and development efforts in our region.

Alam mo — Sakur, happy birthday. Timing ang lahat at [applause]… Kung gusto mo i-blow-out
na lang kita doon sa Pagbabago. If you want to take the plane with me in going back to Manila, I
invite you para ma-blow-out naman kita.

Alam
ko na right or wrong basta may isang Tausug namatay, dumudugo rin ‘yung kasing-kasing mo
kasi alam ko na ayaw mo pero ‘pag may nangyari namatay, patay is patay at alam ko as a Tausug
maski na papano masakit sa iyo. Alam ko ‘yan.

Kaya ang magarantiya ko sa iyo na ang totoo lalabas at lalabas at lalabas in fairness to the Tausug,
policemen and to the soldiers who died. Kaya lang wala tayong option eh. Hindi natin ‘to puwedeng

We would have a more serious trouble if we play with the people’s lives, mga buhay ng sundalo.
So tanggapin mo rin my condolences para sa nangyari. But ako dito since I work for the
government siguro maintindihan mo rin balang- araw.

May gusto akong sabihin sa inyo. It is not that I am inordinately proud of it but that was actually
a part of my campaign. Sinabi ko sa inyo noon kung nakinig kayo sa akin, I never really expected
to win. Sa rating up to the last hour, hanggang four lang talaga ako. In the lineup of four
candidates, four lang ako.

But I promised you something sabi ko corruption mahina ‘yan. Alam ko sinabi ko narinig ninyo
‘yan. Iyang Customs sinsilyo lang ‘yan, BIR sinsilyo ‘yan. Ang corruption na bilyon sa taas.
Sinabi ko sa inyo ‘yan.

And I dare challenge anybody na sabihin nila I am lying. Sinabi ko ‘yan in my own language.

They take advantage sa kanilang political power. Ganoon ‘yan. Sakur, ganoon ‘yan. Every election
ngayon? O ikaw diyan, ikaw ang bahala sa ano ha, you raise the funds.’

Lima ata lang ang tao. Isang pamilya lang ang nag-uusap diyan. Ganun nilaro nila ang bayan ko.
Kaya ako mamatay, mahulog ‘yung eroplano, p***** i**, I am very happy. Alam mo bakit? Sabi ko
without declaring martial law, I dismantled the oligarchy that controlled the economy of the
Filipino people.

just to prop up a government, ‘yung gobyerno ko, na useless naman kung nandiyan sila.

P***** i**. Kasi ayaw kong
maghawak ng gobyerno na wala akong magawa. May mga batas kasi.

Pero ito two years ipitan ito. Ngayon, after two years, ‘pag paalis ako wala pang nangyari, alis
ako.

nagmumura,” o totoo. P***** i**, totoo. T*** i** kung

ang Moro nauna dito sa Mindanao and the Christians came later. As a matter of fact, if you are
not an Islam, you are a dayo kasi walang nitibong dito na Kristiyanos, puro Islam. Kaya

ma…

Ako nga gusto ko mag-usap… Alam ko dahil diyan sa sakit ninyo. I know. I know how to be a
revolutionary and how know — I know how cruel can it be.

Sinabi ko sa kanila, iyang .45 ninyo tatlong magazine ‘yan, it comes with three
magazines. One is deployed, ang isa, dalawa dito. ‘Pag fight na ganun naubos, bunutin mo pa
‘yung isang magazine, wala ka ng M16. Pero ‘yung last magazine kainin mo, kainin mo para sa
sarili mo because I would rather see my soldier dead than iharap sa video tapos gulgulin parang
manok.

I am just sad kung bakit ganun patayin ang

Tutal warrior tayo. If you are a warrior, a Tausug warrior, or a soldier, or ano, isang bala lang.
‘Pag namatay na ‘yan, ‘yon. Pero ang style ng gulgol, it creates more hatred.

Iyang

Ako, may dala-dalang sentimiyento eh. I feel for the Muslim. Eh kakaunti, lola ko lang
naman eh. Pero the fact that she’s a Moro, masasaktan ako na umabot tayo sa hantong na ganito.
If we just can be…

I am just asking, sabihin ko lang sa mga Moro: Be a warrior. Period. Because ang Pilipinas cannot
do ‘yung mga ginagawa nila as a… Sa taga-gobyerno, we are not allowed to do crazy things like
that na sinabi ko na ubusan.

Pero kung ako siguro ang sundalo at kung may nalaman akong sundalo na gumawa no’n, I would
not — you know — I would not begrudge him kasi masakit talaga.
So the earlier, may dalawang taon pa tayo if we can… I’m going — I’m ready to open the borders.

I know that wala na masyadong barter trade kasi lahat ‘yung binibili ng mga Indonesians dito sa
atin, nandiyan na sa kanila ngayon eh. Eh noon wala silang manufacturing. But if there is a way
which we can arrange another — maski big time coal tapos ‘yung safe passage lang ng mga sundalo
Mag-usap tayo. Marami diyan.

Alam mo ang pinaka ano is coal. At maniwala ka, coal will be used for the next 30 years. Hindi
‘yung sabi nila na ano ‘yung sa — the — the sun. Wala ‘yan. Hindi, hindi… It cannot sustain as
yet the technology cannot sustain it. We
have yet to invent a new one.

Maraming mas big time pa na negosyo. If we can just, then they can participate in the… Tayo ang
mag-usap. Kung yayaman ka diyan, mas maligaya ako. Kaibigan kita eh.

But I want you to get rich. But we have to talk because
there is so much that we can do business.

They can
have a monopoly of the barge there.
kami magkarga. Ibuhos mo na lang dito.

Iyong transit niyan, I can concede it to you. But that would… I hope that would come within the
next two years. Hanggang two years na lang ako eh.

So it’s your birthday. I pray to Allah that you will be given a longer life, pursue peace in the
Philippines, and uplift the lives of the Tausug and every Moro in Mindanao.

You have indeed accomplished so much in fighting the Abu Sayyaf Group in recent years, and this
led to significant strides towards crushing them for good.

Let me assure you that as you fight to protect our nation, your needs and those of your families
will be taken care of. The government will continue to implement policies and programs that will
secure your future.

If you are injured, lose a leg, do not worry. You will
run faster. I’ll give you the titanium. It’s a matter of sacrifice ‘yung pag-training. After that, okay
na ‘yan. You can fight again.

At alam mo, bale gusto ko lang — a warning also to those who are administering it, be the military
or civilian. Ang AFP Center, may 50 million ‘yan; ang V. Luna, 50 million a month. Wala pa
kasali ‘yung mga ano. Medisina lang ‘yan ha? Medisina lang ‘yan para sa inyo-inyong pamilya.
Dalhin ninyo doon. Hindi maubos ninyo ‘yan. ‘Pag magkasakit na ganoon, 50 — a month ‘yan.
Noon, that’s a one-year supply for medicines ‘yan. Ako, a month. So dapat malaman ng sundalo

I promise you ‘yung — ano itong tumutunog na sound? [Ano bang tawag diyan, Bong?] [Senator
Go: MRI] MRI. P****** i**, matanda na talaga ako. MRI.

At saka ‘yung ano — ang karamihan diyan is… I’d like to send a — I have a friend who is the chief
of the Cincinnati Orthopedic Hospital. It has something to do with bones. Ito si Eddie Boy Lim is
from Davao. Iyong General Motors nandiyan sa V. Luna, kanila ‘yan. The guy is simply brilliant.
Summa cum laude sa UP ‘yan. They are doctors.
Eddie Boy is practicing in the United States. I hope that if he would come home, I’d like him to just
be a consultant or actually work for the soldiers.

Mahusay itong taong ‘to. Talagang chief ng Cincinnati Orthopedic Hospital. He is coming. He
comes regularly. This time, I am try — I’ll try to talk to him and kung puwede ba. Being a Filipino
once upon a time kasi nag-migrate na, naging Amerikano, if he can come back to do a little service
before he retires para sa mga sundalo ko.

You have a crucial role to fulfill that relates to a cause higher than yourselves. I move forward with
you as we advance the common good and promote the security of the nation.

With your continued support and commitment, I am confident that terrorists and all those who
want to bring our nation down will have no place in our country.

So I pray and I hope — and I hope and I pray na something will come up. Kaya ako wala akong
ano. I assure you kayong mga sundalo, there is never a transaction paper sa table ko. I do not allow
— nandiyan si Delfin — your purchases of whatever, barko na — hindi dumadating ‘yan sa
Malacañan. It starts and ends with him.

DTI ganun, it starts and ends with the secretary.

Day, p***** i** ‘wag mong pasukin ‘yang

bayan. Pero if just a matter of ambition, lay off.

Unless
you are driven by patriotism.
— kaya sabi ko sa kanya in English they say, “if you cannot stand the heat in the kitchen, get out.”

I was still a mayor many, many
years ago. Kumakain kami tapos may newspaper.
Iyon ang ating pang-answer sa “if you cannot stand the heat in the kitchen,
get out”.

So I am very happy that I am with you today at nagkataon pa na birthday mo Sakur. I hope we’d
remain friends. Wala, kat — katarantaduhan ‘yan.

And I say you cannot do it, and why should you do it?
Do not worry. I will stand by you.
mga kasama ninyo, they are now productive. Lahat sila may trabaho.

Iyang Defense department, alam mo ‘yan parang a huge employment agency.

You know I’ll restore you to productivity. Tapos sabi ko bakit ka…? Tutal nakita mo na lahat.
Nahipo mo na lahat. Ano pa bang gusto mo? Eh trabaho. Ngayon, he’s an expert sa computer sa
Aguinaldo. And I am happy.

So I’m happy today that we had this tête-à-tête

between just us. Hindi man ito pang… Kasi ayaw kong magyabang eh.

[applause]
