1. Who is Dr. Jose Rizal?


Jose Protasio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda, or Jose Rizal. He was born on
June, 19 1861, in the town of Calamba, in the province ofLaguna. He had nine sisters and
a brother. A brilliant student who became proficient in multiple languages, José Rizal
studied medicine in Manila. In 1882, he traveled to Spain to complete his medical degree.
He also took graduate studies in Paris, France & Heidelberg, Germany. José Rizal
returned in the Philippines in the year 1892, he called for peaceful reform of Spain's
colonial rule in the Philippines. Although he supported peaceful change, he was executed
on December 30, 1896 at the age of 35. After his 1896 execution, he became an icon for
the nationalist movement, and became the National Hero of the Philippines.

2. Why do we need to study his life and contributions?

We need to study Jose Rizal's life because first we are a Filipino, we should know the history of
our country and how did Rizal fought for us. Studying Rizal can also bring lessons in our life.
Rizal fight only with a pen in his battle and say what he wanted to say and eventually got killed,
we as a citizen should learn on how to handle our battles and how to deliver it for us to be
understood. We think that the more we study about Jose Rizal, the more we understand ourselves
as a Filipino. It can also boost our mind if we learn more things about him, there maybe some
perspectives in our lives that may change upon entering his life and contribution. And of course
this should be always remember as he is one of our heroes.
