Abstract
Two kinds of relations are generally proposed between consciousness and matter. Firstly matter gives rise to
consciousness and secondly consciousness gives rise to matter. The second possibility is explored in the paper.
The term consciousness vector has been proposed by the author earlier. In this paper the origin of space, time
and matter is discussed in the terms of consciousness vector. It is proposed that every form of the matter has the
potential to reach the highest level of consciousness. Other aspects such as disease in biological organisms and
Consciousness vector, do the human beings have the capacity to understand the universe? , implications for fine
arts, ethics, law, development, economics and politics are discussed. Thought Experiments to prove the above
hypothesis are also proposed. Finally the future of the universe is discussed.
Introduction
In the last few decades science has begun a reconsideration of ancient wisdom. The general direction of the
science since the seventeenth century has been towards materialism. However, science in the late twentieth
century began to explore the hitherto sidelined spiritual arena. The spiritual matters are subtle if properly
formulated and understood. The “new” paradigm proposes that consciousness is the basis of all being. The
Consciousness has been variously termed as Spirit, God, Godhead, Ain Sof, Tao, Brahman etc. in popular
religions. According to the “new” paradigm the matter, including the world of experience is the material
manifestation of consciousness. This has been termed as monistic idealism. It has been proposed that field of
consciousness is filed of all possibilities. According to my formalism the field of consciousness is infinite
dimensional with the dimensions representing the various possibilities. I also propose that the field of
consciousness is anisotropic. In some of the “regions” in the field of consciousness the field of consciousness
may decohere into a region of selected dimensions.
How consciousness gives rise to matter?
The regions mentioned above have lower number of dimensions than the ultimate field of consciousness. Thus,
the space-time continuum with four dimensions is created out of the field of consciousness which has infinite
dimensions. When four dimensions of space-time continuum interact with selected dimensions of
consciousness, matter is created. The different types of matter (such as different types of elementary particles)
have different dimensions from the set of dimensions of elementary consciousness, hence the variability in
properties of matter.
The matter can be represented by consciousness vector. The magnitude of the consciousness vector can be
defined by the Hamiltonian L in the equation describing the Quantum Hopfield networks (Behrman et al. 2006),
assuming that all matter can be represented by Quantum Hopfield Networks.

In this equation L function for the QHN is the integral of the Hamiltonian over the imaginary time
loop, divided by β. The inverse temperature β is defined as the total length of the path the qubit has to travel,
from its initial point out into the world and then back. ζ is the tunneling term which is described by the
expression by the expression ζ = -1/2[tanh(βK/n]. The variable t represents the inverse temperature ranging from
0 to β, which is a discrete variable, ranging from 0 to n-1. The functions {Sj} refer to the instantaneous values
assumed by each of the qubits j (total N qubits) i.e., the eigenvalues of the operators σz(t) for each of the j
qubits. The σz(t) describes all possible paths for each of the j qubits. α is the Coulombic interaction between all
the pairs of qubits in an array. The QHN starts out at some initial state after assuming an initial dipole value to
each qubit. The output of each neuron is updated according to its weighted inputs. The updating procedure of
the network converges to a stable state achieving a local minimum. This final state is the output of the network.
The above equation by Behrman et al. assumes the qubits as charged particles, however the qubits may not
always be charged, accordingly the term α may be replaced by other terms representing non coulombic
interactions in real situations. It has also been assumed by Behrman et al. that the qubits are arranged in the form
of hexagonal lattice. Again the real situations may be different and may require the modification of the equation.
The cardinality of the consciousness vector would be by definition the number of dimensions it has.

Teilhard’s law of consciousness and the consciousness vector

As is well known the Teilhard’s law states that the universe is evolving towards highest levels
of complexity and consciousness. How can this law be represented in terms of consciousness vector? We
propose that with the increase in levels of consciousness the L first increases to maximal value and then
decreases to 0. The cardinality of the consciousness vector increase till it becomes infinite. Thus in the highest
levels of consciousness the L is zero (as there is no matter) and the cardinality is infinite. (Fig.1 and Fig.2)

Fig. 1 The increase in value of L with increase in levels of consciousness. The y axis represents the value of L and x-axis represents levels of
consciousness

Fig.2 The increase in cardinality of consciousness vector with the increase in levels of consciousness .The y-axis represents the cardinality
of consciousness vector and x-axis represents the consciousness levels

Every form of the matter has the potential to reach the highest form of consciousness
I propose that every form of matter by increasing its complexity and coherence has the potential to reach the
highest form of consciousness. It is easier for a human being to achieve highest state of consciousness (the
elementary consciousness) than ordinary inanimate matter because the human body has higher state of
consciousness than the inanimate matter
Disease in biological organisms and Consciousness vector
I have proposed earlier that the disease in the living organisms decrease the consciousness vector of the human
body (Grover, 2011 a and b). What does it mean in the terms of consciousness vector? This could mean either of
the following two things, firstly the “L” term is reduced due to decrease in complexity and coherence, or
secondly the cardinality of consciousness vector of the diseased person/organ/system
system/tissue/cell/molecule is reduced.
Do the human beings have the capacity to understand the universe?
It has been debated whether the human beings have the capacity to understand the universe. I posit that we can
understand the universe completely in all aspects since every part of our body has the potential to reach the
elementary consciousness, which is the source of all knowledge.
Implications for fine arts
This theory has important implications for fine arts viz. music, arts, literature etc. All the music, arts, literature
created by human beings should increase the consciousness vector of the human beings, both the creator and the
person for whom the work is meant. It should not only increase the consciousness vector of the human beings
but should also increase the consciousness vector of the universe. The consciousness vector of the universe
would be influenced by the actions that such work produces.
Implications for ethics, law, development, economics and politics
The code for the ethics and law and the direction that development, economics and politics should be such that it
increases the consciousness vector of the living organisms and even inanimate matter, ultimately leading to the
increase in consciousness vector of the universe.

Implication for sports

Different sports utilize different parts of the body. Sports such as shooting and cricket may require hand eye co-
ordination besides other things. Other specialized sports may require activity of special muscles. For peak
performance the consciousness vectors of the tissues/organs involved should be maximum possible.
Thought Experiments to prove the above hypothesis
In the equation by Behrman et al. qubits are arranged in the form of a hexagonal lattice. However the geometry
of real world molecules and inanimate and animate matter are very different from that of the hexagonal lattice. It
is very difficult to model even the simple biological molecules to the level of elementary particles, let alone
whole cells/tissues/organisms. In future when the technology is advanced enough one can model the molecules
and other forms of matter to the particle level and then calculate L according to equation 1. If my hypothesis is
correct the studies should show that value of L and cardinality of consciousness vector of the
proteins/DNA/RNA involved in disease is less than that of the proteins not involved in disease. Similar results
should be found if the cells, tissues and organs can be modeled in future to subatomic levels.
I have proposed earlier (Grover, 2011 a) that universe may have several levels of consciousness. If in future the
technology advances to such a level that the entire universe can be modeled to the subatomic level then my
predictions about the levels of consciousness of the universe can be tested using the equations above.
The Future of the Universe
As mentioned earlier it has been proposed by Teilhard that the universe is evolving in the direction of increasing
consciousness. In the context of my hypothesis I propose that the anisotropic field of consciousness is evolving
towards the isotropicity. Thus ultimately the number of dimensions associated with space-time and matter would
become infinite and space-time and matter would disappear .What would remain is the isotropic world of
consciousness of highest level.
It has been proposed that there are some similarities between human mind and the universe (Zizzi, 2006 ). I
propose that since everything in the universe has the potential to reach highest forms of consciousness so “in
potentia” everything in the universe is similar to each other. Thus the universe has been proposed to undergo
cycles (for review Grover and Grover, 2012) like (as it has been proposed in many traditions) human beings
undergo cycles of birth and death. Like human beings the universe would achieve salvation when it is freed
from the cycles of birth and death and become one with the elementary form of consciousness.
Conclusions
It is apparent from the paper that the big questions from the point of view of human beings can be answered by
assuming that consciousness gave rise to matter. However definitive experimentation is required to prove the
above. Possibly, a science which methodically uses external experimentation and inner experience is required.
