Valve is a device that regulates, directs

or controls the flow of a fluid through
a pipeline, by opening, closing a
passageway.

 Classification
 Linear Motion Valves – The Valves in which the
closure element moves in a straight line to allow, stop
or throttle the flow.

 Rotary Motion Valves – When the Valve closure

element travels along the angular or circular path.

 Quarter Turn Valves – Some rotary motion Valves

require approximately a quarter turn (0 to 90 deg).
Motion of the stem to go to fully open from a fully
closed position or vice versa.

Body:
It is called the Shell or Primary boundary of a valve. It
serves as the principal element of a valve assembly because
it is the framework that holds every thing together.

Bonnet:
• The cover for the opening in the valve body.
Bonnet features:
• Bonnet is the second principal Pressure boundary of a
valve
• It is cast or forged of the same material as the body &
is connected to the body by a threaded, bolted or welded
joint.

Valve Trim:
• Wetted Parts (Seat Ring & Disc) are Hardfaced
over base material based on temperature limits.
Also this hardfaced will handle high velocity during
performance of valves. This is mainly followed in
Gate, Globe & Check valves.

Disc:
Disc is the third primary principal pressure boundary. It
provide the capability for allowing and stopping fluid flow. The
disc is a pressure retaining part. Discs are typically forged & in
some designs hard-surfaced to provide good wear
characteristics. Most of the valves are named in a part
according to the design of their discs.

Seat or Seat Ring:
Provides the seating surface for the disc. The surface is
often hard faced by welding and then machining the contact
surface of the seal ring.

Stem:
Connects the Hand Lever / Hand wheel / Actuator with
disc.

Packing :
It is used to prevent leakage from the space between
the stem and the bonnet.

Gasket:
It is used to prevent leakage from the Bonnet and Body
area.
