DPR on Integrated RAS for Trout Culture

2: INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND
Trout fish culture is an ideal option for sustainable use of water resources
in mountainous regions because here both surface and underground waters
are suitable for this purpose. In regions where income-generation and
employment opportunities are scarce, trout farming could help to ensure
employment and steady incomes in addition to the production, trout farming
could also ensure increased income and employment through angling tourism,
restaurants and related services. The Rainbow trout has many local strains,
which have developed in the different river systems. Out of these, numerous
improved commercial strains have been bred. The widely cultured commercial
strains have been improved from those original rainbow trout populations that
possessed advantageous qualities, such as hardiness, fast growth, resistance
to diseases and reliable reproduction under farm conditions.
3. BENEFITS AND JUSTIFICATION:
Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) is a farm fish and is thriving well
in culture system in almost all Himalayan States. There is a great demand of
trout fish in India as well it is having good market in other parts of the world,
there is a great potential for development of Trout Fisheries in all hill states as
they are having abundant Cold water resources in the form of springs, high
altitude glacier lakes, snow fed streams, rivers & reservoirs are available for
undertaking such culture. Hill States are having little land holdings as such
need is to culture this species under the RAS conditions for better management
and higher production and intern high returns. The Establishment of RAS of
10 MT Production Capacity of Table size trout and 2 Lakhs Trout fingerlings
will serve as an integrated unit in to the private sector in all the hill states.
4. OBJECTIVES:
 Promote semi- indoor/ indoor trout farming under RAS for harnessing
higher production/unit area
 Facilitate use of new infrastructure for quality seed rearing
 Promote water-reuse concept for integration of RAS to facilitate multiple
crop production and income
 Facilitate commercial farming by entrepreneurs/Corporate sector with
more private investment

4|Page
DPR: INTEGRATED RECIRCULATRY AQUACULTURE SYSTEM

 Increase production of Trout to enhance its share in country’s total fish

production.

5. TECHNICAL DETAILS

a. Site/Location details: The proposed site is located at

______________________________________________________________________________
_______ and is free from all encumbrances. The site is suitable for carrying out
RAS culture for Trout. The water sources are
_______________________________________________and is free from pollution. The
site is not flood prone and is easily accessible by road and has regular power
supply. There is good demand for the fish seed in the districts and adjoining
districts. The farmer is having the land area of _______________ ha.

b. Technical specifications:
 Source of brooders:

The farmer will procure 700 Kg. of healthy brooders from

guidance of trained district fishery officers. The selected beneficiaries are

already well versed with Trout culture and breeding. Further, hand holding will
be provided to the farmer by the state fisheries department.

b. Mode of beneficiary selection:

The selection of beneficiary has been done through field visit of NFDB
official and state government official, wherein potential beneficiaries were
identified by analyzing their experience, technical knowledge and capability for
investment in the project. On the receipt of the application, verification of the
beneficiary was done District Fishery Officer. Site inspection was also carried
out for the feasibility of the of the project. After assuring all the technical and
marketing aspects, the beneficiaries were finalized.
