Hello! Let us learn the concepts of principal roots and how to determine whether it is rational or irrational.
A real number has its Principal Root that can be extracted when using the symbol √ that is known as radical sign. The
combination of the radical sign together with the number is called a radical. The number under the radical sign is known as the
radicand.
Radical Radicand Principal Root
√ 36 36 6
√2 2 1. 414235
The square root of a positive integer is either rational or irrational. If the radicand is a perfect square, the square root is rational.
Otherwise, it is irrational. Irrational numbers like √ 2, √ 3, √ 5, √ 7, etc., when written as decimals are nonterminating and
nonrepeating decimals.
Example 1: Determine whether each square root is rational or irrational.
a. √ 169 b. √ 41,
Solution:
a. Since 169 is a perfect square, √ 169 is rational.
b. Since 41 is not a perfect square, √ 41 is irrational.
