MODULE 1: Introductory Ideas and Concepts in History

This module introduces you to the fundamental ideas and concepts in understanding history. In
particular, this guides you in understanding the importance of historiography (i.e., the art and method of
historical investigation) in studying Philippine history. The basic concepts that you will have to learn
include: the meaning and relevance of history; the sources of history; the types of sources; in ternal and
external criticism in understanding history; repositories of primary sources; kinds of primary sources,
among others. To apply your knowledge and to test further your understanding of the basic concepts
you have gone through, you will be required to read two readings on the Tejeros Convention: “Memoirs
of a General” by Santiago Alvarez (as primary source text) and “Seeds of Discontent” in the Revolt of the
Masses by Teodoro Agoncillo (as secondary source text).

Part I Course Outcomes and Learning Objectives

Course Outcomes

1. Demonstrate critical understanding of history as evidenced by the identification of credible and

authentic primary sources and knowledge in evaluating their provenance.
2. Articulate the analysis of the content, context and perspectives behind the historical accounts of
the Tejeros Convention.

Learning Objectives: At the end of the module, the students must have:

1. Paraphrased the meaning, ideas and relevance of history.

2. Differentiated the types of sources and criticisms governing basic historical analysis
3. Illustrate the key indicators or considerations in comparing and contrasting primary sources and
secondary sources of history as exemplified by the texts on Tejeros Convention.

Part II Assessment

1. Write an essay explaining the relevance of history, distinguishing the primary and secondary
source, and internal and external criticisms.

2. A. Come up with a worksheet comparing and contrasting the versions of Santiago Alvarez
(Memoirs of a General) and Teodoro Agoncillo (“Seeds of Discontent” in Revolt of the Masses)
guided by the suggested indicators or considerations.

B. Write a discussion on the family’s “treasure or heirloom” that is handed down to your family
by your, say, a grandmother. What is the historical significance of that treasure or heirloom in
your family’s life?
Part III Teaching and Learning Activities

1. In order to acquire a meaningful understanding of the concept of history and appreciate its
relevance, and get to know the content of the Tejeros Convention, you need to read on the
following required and suggested sources:

A. Grey, E. and Biong, R. (2017). “Basic Concepts and Information” (Basic Ideas about History).
In Readings in Philippine History (Student Edition). Iloilo City: Malones Printing Press and
Publishing House, pp. 1-34.

D. Historical Method – PPT Slides of Dr. Rina Juan

2. After reading and exploring all the required/suggested aforesaid readings and sources, you are
already equipped with the relevant knowledge and intellectual resources to understand
historical methods. Following this, come up with a worksheet comparing and contrasting the
versions of Santiago Alvarez (Memoirs of a General) and Teodoro Agoncillo (“Seeds of
Discontent” in Revolt of the Masses) guided by the suggested indicators or considerations.

Learning Evidence (LE) 1:

Worksheet on Comparative Analysis of Primary vs. Secondary Sources
(Tejeros Convention, 1897)

Primary Source: Santiago Secondary Source: Teodoro

Alvarez “Memoirs of a General” Agoncillo’s “Seeds of Discontent”
Author’s Background

When was the

account written?
Mention of Dates

Key personal ties

Sequencing of Events

Differences between
2 accounts (in
general)

The above worksheet is your guide. In doing the comparative analysis, you have to come
up with a one full-page bigger Table where you can write all your findings/discoveries under each
column. You are expected to do further research/reading on each area, especially on the “Author’s
Background.” After you have completed the worksheet, come up with a narrative or discussion
below it. You are expected to download your output/work on: Canvas (if you are Category 3), FB
Group or Messenger GC (if you are Category 2) and a print out (in PDF format, if you’re Category 1).

3. Interview your surviving grandmother, or whoever among your surviving ancestors, about the
family’s treasure/heirloom. Ask about the historical significance of that treasure in your family’s
life, especially in the present time.
