On Friday 19th, a strong earthquake hit the Greek capital of Athens, although people
reported no deaths or serious injuries.
Only several abandoned buildings were damaged in the 5.1 magnitude quake.
The epicentre of the earthquake was about 14 miles from the city, and it had ‘a very
shallow depth’ which is why people felt it so strongly.
Greece is no stranger to earthquakes, but strong seismic activity in Athens is fairly rare,
as the city was built on solid ground, according to an expert approached by the BBC.
This was the first major earthquake to hit Athens since 1999, when a 5.9 magnitude
quake left 143 people dead and many structures destroyed.
Difficult words: magnitude (strength – how strong something is), epicentre (the point
on the earth which is above the centre of an earthquake), approach (speak to
somebody).
