Time : Three Hours *0782* Max. Marks : 80
_____________________________________________________________________
Notes : 1. All questions carry equal marks.
2. Answer any four questions.
3. Assume suitable data wherever necessary.
4. Illustrate your answers wherever necessary with the help of neat sketches.
5. Use of slide rule, Logarithmic tables, Stem tables, Mollier's chart, Drawing
instruments, Thermodynamic tables for moist air, Psychrometric charts and
Refrigeration charts is permitted.

1. a) Derive the transfer function for manometer between the applied pressure and the 10
manometer reading Assume the flow in the manometer to be laminar.

b) Obtain the response equation of underdamped second order system for unit step change in 10
the input variable.

2. A thermometer is observed to exhibit the first order dynamics. The response of the 20
thermometer was evaluated by applying a step change in the bath in which the
thermometer is placed. After 6 second the output value was 63.2 percent of the total
applied step change. The thermometer reading at temperature of 55ºC was put into a bath
whose temperature was varied sinusoidally between 50ºC and 60ºC with a 60 sec/cycle
period of oscillation.
Determine.
i) Maximum and minimum temperature indicated by the thermometer.

ii) Phase lag.

iii) Amplitude ratio.

3. a) A proportional controller is used for two non-interacting liquid level system. The time 10
constants for tanks are 1 min and 0.5 min. The value of gain of controller is 5. Assume
unity feedback control system. The set point of the control system is given step change of
magnitude 0.4 Determine the offset.

b) Obtain the offset for proportional derivative controller for unit step change in the load 10
variable taking example of first order system. Assume unity feed-back system.

4. a) Discuss the working mechanism of the following. 10

i) Hydraulic proportional derivative controller.

ii) Flapper-nozzle pneumatic proportional integral controller.

b) Discuss the working mechanism of the pneumatic control value and obtain its transfer 10
function.

ii) Programmable logic controller.

iii) Distributed control system.

b) Discuss the direct digital feedback control of the following. 10

i) Heat exchanger.

ii) Evaporator.

6. a) Discuss the following. 10
