4. a) A pan of water has been exposed to a surface area of 1m 2 which is inserted into a bottom 10
of large duct to humidity the heated air stream. The surface of water is at 292K. The air
temperature is 308K at 1atm & flows parallel to the surface with a velocity of 2 m/s. If
0.17kg of water evaporates from the pan per hour, determine the partial pressure of the
moisture in the air stream.
m2
Data : V.P. water = 2200 Pa, D = 2.63 10−5
s
air = 1.568 10−5 m2 / s, air = 1.12kg / m3
b) Water flows through a 5cm diameter, 100m long pipe. The flow is turbulent & the heat 6
transfer coefficient is estimated as 15.31kW / m2k. Using Reynold’s analogy determine
the pressure drop.
Data : water = 1000kg / m3
water = 1cP
Cp water = 4800 J / kg.k
5. a) Water at 25ºC flows through a 5cm diameter pipe at an average velocity of 3 m/s. A 0.6m 8
Section of pipe is replaced with a tube made of solid NaCl. Compare mass transfer
coefficient of NaCl in water using all analogies.
Data : D = 1.26 10−5 cm2 / s, Sc = 790
b) Air at 10ºC & 100 kPa is flowing over a plate at a velocity of 3 m/s. If the plate is 30cm 8
wide & at 60ºC, determine.

6. a) A 950 kg vehicle which is in steady motion consumes its power delivered to wheels in over 10
coming aerodynamic drag & the rolling resistance. Friction at the bearings of the wheels is
negligible.
Determine the speed at which the rolling resistance is equal to aerodynamic drag & the
maximum speed of the car.
Data : Mass of vehicle = 950 kg, AP = 1.8m2 , CD = 0.32, rolling resistance
coefficient = 0.04, Maximum power to wheels = 80kW, air = 1.12 kg / m3 .
i) Turbulent flow.
7. Show that Nu = 2.667 for flow through pipe when temperature profile is parabolic and 16
velocity profile is constant.
