4. Solve any five questions.

1. a) Water is flowing at a rate of 0.03154m3 / s through a nozzle & discharges to atmosphere is 6


attached at the upstream end point & frictional losses are negligible. The upstream ID of
pipe is 0.0635 ‘m’ & the downstream ID is 0.0286 ‘m’. Calculate the resultant force on the

b) A Newtonian liquid of constant density & viscosity is taken in a cylindrical container of 10
radius ‘R’. The container is caused to rotate about its own axis at an angular velocity ‘w’.
Find the shape of the free surface of the liquid at S.S. Conditions. Following equations can

2. a) Derive equation of motion for cartesian coordinate system from fundamentals. Draw a 10
well labelled sketch & state all the assumptions made.
Give the vector form of equation of Navier Stokes.

b) A Newtonian liquid is flowing down an inclined plate having length ‘L’ & width ‘W’, 6
making an angle '  ' with vertical axis.
Make a differential balance for momentum & develop equation for
i) Shear stress distribution.
ii) Velocity distribution.
iii) Average velocity.

3. a) An electric wire of radius ‘R’, electrical conductivity 'k e ' ohm−1 .cm−1 & thermal 8

conductivity 'k ' w/ m− k is carrying electric current ‘I’ amp / cm2 . The rate of heat
generation per unit volume due to some electrical energy converted into heat energy is given

4. a) A pan of water has been exposed to a surface area of 1m 2 which is inserted into a bottom 10
of large duct to humidity the heated air stream. The surface of water is at 292K. The air
temperature is 308K at 1atm & flows parallel to the surface with a velocity of 2 m/s. If
0.17kg of water evaporates from the pan per hour, determine the partial pressure of the
moisture in the air stream.

b) Water flows through a 5cm diameter, 100m long pipe. The flow is turbulent & the heat 6
transfer coefficient is estimated as 15.31kW / m2k. Using Reynold’s analogy determine
the pressure drop.

5. a) Water at 25ºC flows through a 5cm diameter pipe at an average velocity of 3 m/s. A 0.6m 8
Section of pipe is replaced with a tube made of solid NaCl. Compare mass transfer
coefficient of NaCl in water using all analogies.
Data : D = 1.26 10−5 cm2 / s, Sc = 790

b) Air at 10ºC & 100 kPa is flowing over a plate at a velocity of 3 m/s. If the plate is 30cm 8
wide & at 60ºC, determine.

i) Velocity boundary layer thickness

ii) Local friction factor C fx

iii) Shear stress or Local drag

iv) Thermal Boundary Layer thickness

v) Local heat transfer coefficient, h x .

6. a) A 950 kg vehicle which is in steady motion consumes its power delivered to wheels in over 10
coming aerodynamic drag & the rolling resistance. Friction at the bearings of the wheels is
negligible.
Determine the speed at which the rolling resistance is equal to aerodynamic drag & the
maximum speed of the car.
Data : Mass of vehicle = 950 kg, AP = 1.8m2 , CD = 0.32, rolling resistance
coefficient = 0.04, Maximum power to wheels = 80kW, air = 1.12 kg / m3 .

b) Write short notes: any three. 6

i) Turbulent flow.

iv) Non-Newtonian liquids.

v) Universal velocity profile.

vi) Mass Transport in kidney.

7. Show that Nu = 2.667 for flow through pipe when temperature profile is parabolic and 16
velocity profile is constant.
