 SPECIFICATONS OF
THERMOPLASTIC MARKING
(As per New MOST Specifications & Code of Practice for road
markings IRC : 35 - 1997)
General : The colour, width and layout of road markings shall be in
accordance with Code of Practice for Road markings with paints, IRC: 35-
1997, and specified in drawings or as directed by the engineer.

Thermoplastic compound : It shall be homogeneously composed of

aggregate, pigment, resin and glass reflectorized beads.
(Complying MOST 803 Specs.)

The compound shall have following constituents

( in percent by weight)

Binder 1 8.0 minimum 18.0 minimum
Glass beads 35.0% 35.0%
Titanium Dioxide 10% minimum -
Calcium carbonate 25% 25%
Insert fillers 12% 12%
Yellow pigment - 10%

The material shall be screeded / extruded on to the pavement in a molten

state by thermoplastic applicator machine having facility of controlling
temperature & flow of material at specific rate. The machine shall have a
propelling device at a specified speed to make the stripes in desired width
& thickness It also has a despencing device for glass beads for drop on/
spray at specified rate; on immediately layed molten thermoplastic
compound. Upon cooling to ambient pavement temperature, it shall
produce an adherent pavement marking of specified thickness and width
and capable of resisting deformation by traffic.

Colour : The colour of the compound shall be white or yellow (IS colour
no.356) as specified in the drawing or as directed by engineer in charge.

Cement Surface application : Where the compound is to be applied

on cement concrete surface, a sealing primer as recommended by the
manufacturer may be used.

Transport (section - 801)

Sign substrate : 2 mm aluminum sheet. (unless otherwise specified)

Fabrication : As per design/drawings & sizes given in I.R.C. 67-2001
(Code of Practice for Road signs) or as specified by the purchaser.
Pre Treatment : Degreasing, Descaling & Phosphating / acid etching for
removal of dust, dirt & grease to receive paint & retro-reflective process.
Paint on backside : Epoxy Powder coating
Retro reflective process : The signs are reflectorised with any of the
following types of retro reflective material as required / ordered by the
purchaser.
1.ASTM Type -I: Engineer Grade
2.ASTM Type-III :High Intensity Grade encapsulated lens
3.ASTM Type-IV:High Intensity Prismatic grade(Latest Entry of MOST)
4.ASTM Type-VII: Diamond grade LDP
5.ASTM Type-VIII: Microprismatic grade
6. ASTM Type-IX: Diamond grade VIP
7.ASTM Type-XI: Dimond grade cube (DG cube)
All the grades are made of millions of micro lenses or prisms coveredwith
thin, flexible, strong and durable plastic sheet having U. V. stabilised
translucent colors or white (colourless). The High
Intensity grade sheeting is made with Encapsulated lense where as
Engineer grade sheeting is made with enclosed lenses and Prismatic
gradeis made with Micro-Prisma. All the materials fully complies or
exceeds latest specifications of M.O.S.T. section- 801. The minimum
coefficient of retro-reflection is as follows.
