Title: Jesus Calls the Apostles

Christian Message
Doctrine: The call of the apostles is a mission and plan of God to spread and evangelize men
in all ends of the earth.
Moral: As a follower and believer of Christ, our standard of living and proclaiming the Gospel
must be Jesus Christ that like the apostles, who also sought to be like Him.
Worship: Upon hearing the Gospels, we, in turn, should see the message of God to internalize
more fully the will of God in us.

Learning Objectives:
1. Realize that the call of the apostles is part of God's saving plan
2. Bear witness to Jesus who became in his person the fundamental norm of his disciples and
for all human moral life
3. Practice the habit of reflecting the Gospels and feel the message of these.

Content
In the Gospel of St. Luke 5:1-11, we can read and understand the time when Jesus
commanded Simon Peter to lower down his net to catch some fish. Peter replied that he
almost spent many hours at the center of the lake, but caught nothing. Still, Peter followed
Jesus and have catch plenty of fish. Jesus commissioned Peter and the other apostles, after
they had knelt down before Jesus, to be fisher of men.

Jesus chose twelve apostles to be his companions and partners in His mission and later,
these apostles will become the foundation of the Church. These “fishers of men” were called
to do the mission for God’s Kingdom and suffered from danger and even death for Christ’s
sake. Now they are venerated by the Church and serve as inspiration to the Catholic

Christians to share also in the apostolic mission of Christ in whatever they can and according
to their state in life.

B.1 Call and Mission

• Jesus called the apostles in a normal, ordinary, and simplest way.
• The apostles, in order to follow Jesus, left everything including their possession, their
job, and even their loved ones.
• He wants the apostles to be their companion and partners in His mission.
• Every call needs a response, and when Jesus called the apostles, the response to His
call is to follow Him.
• In order to follow Him fully, Jesus taught them about God, His revelation, His saving

plan and everything about Him. He also taught them the way of life that they should
live in order for them to do the mission entrusted to them.

B.2 The Apostles

• When Jesus called His disciples or his apostles, he chose twelve.
• These apostles are Peter, Andrew, James the Greater, John, Philip, Bartholomew,
Levi/ Matthew, Thomas and James the Less, Simon, Thaddeus, and Judas Iscariot.
(Read p. 4-6 for the description about these twelve apostles on your book.)
• All the chosen apostles of Jesus Christ have died but the mission of the apostles did
not stop because of the apostolic tradition. The Pope, together with the college of
Bishops, share and continue the mission of Christ in our modern times.

Pope Francis is the 266th Pope of the Catholic Church. Do you know some Popes of our

B.3 Fishers of Men

• The thing very common at least, when Jesus called the apostles, among them are
fisherman. Very providential and symbolic, in the Gospel, Jesus called fishermen like
Peter, and Andrew, to be “fishers of men”.
• “Fishers of men” means to they are entitle to “catch” people for God’s Kingdom.
• In typology, fishermen are exposed to danger. They go out into the sea facing big
waves of the sea and strong winds just to catch fish. Aside from it, going to the sea is a
great loneliness. Fish could be caught only at early dawn and late night, and the
feelings that fishermen could experience during these times may be terrible and
depressing.
• To be “fishers of me” is not an easy task. The apostles walked and travelled into
distance where danger and loneliness may be encountered. Nevertheless, some
apostles succeeded in converting people into Christians, but some of them suffered
form great tribulations. Some were prisoned, and some were put into death. But all
these await their great reward in heaven just as Jesus had promised them.

• All apostles except Judas Iscariot, are now venerated by the Church as examples and
inspiration of true faith in Christ. The call of the Jesus never stopped to the apostles.
He continues to call each one of us, who are members of the Church through Baptism.
• We are called to live out the call of Christ, respond and put our faith into action as we
share also in the priesthood of Christ, to intercede for others to bring before God
especially those who have requested our prayers.

B.4 St. Margaret Mary Alacoque

• St. Mary Margaret Alacoque is known for a revealing her experiences with Jesus Christ
and truly, our Lord Jesus Christ made an apparition to her, that until today, this image
of Jesus Christ is spread throughout to all nations and is very popular.
