English Modal Kannada Equivalent Word
Can/May Infinitive Mood Type 3 + ಬಹುದು. I can do. ನಾನು ಮಾಡ ಬಹುದು

• Steps: Type 3 Infinite Mood + ಲ ೋ + ಬ ೋಕು ---->emphasis, insist
• The ಲ ೋ gives more emphasis or the importance of the action.
• ನನಗ ತ್ುುಂಬಾ ಹಸಿವಾಗಿದ . ನಾನು ಈಕ್ಷಣವ ೋ ತಿನನಲ ೋ ಬ ೋಕು I am feeling very
hungry, I certainly have to eat right now!

• Usage: ನಿೋನು ಆ ಕ ಲ್ಸ ಮಾಡ ಬಾರದು You cannot do that work(No
permission)
• Steps: Take the Type 3 Infinite Mood of the verb and add “ಬಾರದು”
• ನಿನನ ತ್ಾಯಿಯನುನ ಇವತ್ುಾ ರಾತಿಿ ಕರ ಯ ಬಾರದು You cannot call your
mother tonight(No permission)
• ನಿೋನು ಈ cinema ನ ೋಡ ಬಾರದು You should not watch that movie

• ಆಗಲ್ಲ : Cannot – “Not willing” and also “Not able to”
• ಆಗಲ್ಲ literally means “not happening”
• ಆಗಲ್ಲ is in simple present tense negation form of ಆಗು verb
• ಆಗುತ್ಾಾ ಇಲ್ಲ(colloquially: ಆಗ್-ತ್ಾಯಿಲ್ಲ) is the present continuous equivalent
• ಆಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ(colloquially: ಆಗ ೋದಿಲ್ಲ) is future tense equivalent
• They all indicate “cannot”, can’t”
• Usage: ನಾನು ಆ ಕ ಲ್ಸ ಮಾಡಕ ೆ ಆಗಲ್ಲ I cannot do that work(Not able to or
not willing to). You can translate it as: I am not doing that work(in the
sense of refusing to do the work)
• Steps: Take the Type 1 Infinite Mood of the verb and add ಆಗಲ್ಲ/ಆಗುತ್ಾಾ
ಇಲ್ಲ/ಆಗ ೋದಿಲ್ಲ
• Remember: These words can be used in any context to indicate negation
or non-performance of any action, just by putting the action verb in
front in Type 1 Infinitive form. There is a lot of flexibility in the
context(inability, unwillingness, restriction)

 ಆಗಲ್ಲ examples
• ನನನ ತ್ಾಯಿಯನುನ ಇವತ್ುಾ ರಾತಿಿ ಕರ ಯಕ ೆ ಆಗಲ್ಲ I cannot call my mother
tonight(I am busy). Literally: Calling my mother tonight is not
happening
• ನಾನು ಈ cinema ನ ೋಡಕ ೆ ಆಗಲ್ಲ I cannot watch that movie(I am busy)
• ನಾನು ಒಳಗಡ ಬರಕ ೆ ಆಗಲ್ಲ I cannot come in(not willing).I am not
coming inside
• ನಾನು ನಿಮಮ ಲ ೋಖನಿಯನುನ ಬಳಸಕ ೆ ಆಗಲಾಾ? Won’t I be able to use your
pen?
• ಸುಂಜ ಒಳಗ ಕ ಲ್ಸ ಮುಗಿಸಲ್ಲಕ ೆ ಆಗಲಾಾ? Won’t you be able to finish the
work by evening?
• ಮಗು ಅಳುವುದನುನ ಕ ೋಳಕ ೆ ಆಗುತ್ಾಾಯಿಲ್ಲ Not able to hear the crying of the
baby(meaning: the crying is making me feel restless)

• The concept of “cannot” is expressed in Kannada with “ಆಗಲ್ಲ”
• Just the word “ಆಗಲ್ಲ” is good enough to say “cannot” in any
situation.
• Here the inability or unwillingness or intolerability or disagreement
to do the action is expressed
• ಆಗಲ್ಲ = ಆಗು + ಅಲ್ಲ. This represents present and future tenses only.
• To represent past tense, use ಆಗಲ್ು + ಇಲ್ಲ = ಆಗಲ್ಲಲ್ಲ
• To represent present continuous tense use ಆಗುತ್ಾಾ + ಇಲ್ಲ = ಆಗುತಿಾಲ್ಲ
• Pure future tense is also represented with ಆಗುವುದು + ಇಲ್ಲ =
ಆಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ --> ಆಗ ೋದಿಲ್ಲ(colloquial)
• The verb that comes before the ಆಗಲ್ಲ is in infinite Mood Type 1.
• Just remember that ಆಗಲ್ಲ is a “flexible” cannot.

 Ability – ಸಾಮರ್ಥಯಯ - Can – ಬಹುದು – Colloquial Usage
• I can do it ನಾನು ಮಾಡ ಬಹುದು ---> Type 3 infinitive
• I cannot do it ನಾನು ಮಾಡ ಸಾಧ್ಯವಿಲ್ಲ---> Type 3 infinitive
• I cannot do it ನನಗ ಮಾಡಲ್ಲಕ ೆ ಸಾಧ್ಯವಿಲ್ಲ-->Type 1 infinitive
• I can see ನಾನು ನ ೋಡ ಬಹುದು
• I can walk faster ನಾನು ಬ ೋಗವಾಗಿ ನಡ ಯ ಬಹುದು
• I can think ನಾನು ಯೋಚಿಸ ಬಹುದು
• He cannot finish the work ಅವನು ಕ ಲ್ಸ ಮುಗಿಸಲ್ಲಕ ೆ ಸಾಧ್ಯವಿಲ್ಲ
• Colloquial Kannada also uses Present continuous tense for Cannot
• I am not able to hear ಕ ೋಳ್ಳಸುತ್ಾಾ ಇಲ್ಲ, when spoken fast becomes ಕ ೋಳುಸ್-
ತ್ಾ-ಇಲ್ಲ. ನಿೋವು ಹ ೋಳ್ಳದುೆ ನನಗ ಕ ೋಳ್ಳಸಲ್ಲಲ್ಲ is also fine
• I am not able to see ಕಾಣುಸ್-ತ್ಾ-ಇಲ್ಲ(actual ಕಾಣಿಸುತ್ಾಾ ಇಲ್ಲ)
• I am able to see ಕಾಣತ್ ಾ (Proper form:ಕಾಣುತ್ಾದ )
• I am able to hear ಕ ೋಳತ್ ಾ (Proper form:ಕ ೋಳುತ್ಾದ )

 Willingness - Can – ಬಹುದು
• I can do it ನಾನು ಮಾಡ ಬಹುದು
• I cannot do it ನಾನು ಮಾಡಕ ೆ ಆಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ/ಆಗಲ್ಲ(not willing)
• I can see ನಾನು ನ ೋಡ ಬಹುದು

• “Cannot” to indicate unwillingness or disagreement is expressed
with ಆಗಲ್ಲ(Present and Future Tense). ಆಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ (Future Tense)

• Just one word “ಆಗಲ್ಲ” means “cannot” in the sense of a)unwillingness

 More on ಆಗಲ್ಲ and similar patterns – Cannot
• Just by adding “ಅಲ್ಲ” to the verb we can give the effect of not wanting
to do something in present and future, in the sense of saying
“cannot”(unwillingness)
• ನಿೋನು ಹ ೋಗು, ನಾನು ಬರಲ್ಲ You go. I am not coming
• ನನಗ ತ್ುಂಪಾಗಿದ . ಆದೆರುಂದ ನಾನು ಸಾನನ ಮಾಡಲ್ಲ I am feeling cold. So I am
not bathing
• ನಿೋನು ಹ ೋಗಿ ಬಾಗಿಲ್ು ತ್ ಗ . ನಾನು ತ್ ಗ ಯಲ್ಲ You go and open the door. I
am not opening/cannot open.
• ಇವತ್ುಾ ನಾನು ನಿನಗ ಸಿಗಲ್ಲ. ನನಗ ಸಿಕೆ ಪಟ್ ೆ ಕ ಲ್ಸ ಇದ . Today I cannot
meet you. I have a hell a lot of work
• ನಾನು ನಿನಗ ಹಣ ಕ ಡಲ್ಲ I will not/cannot give you money
• ಮೋಜು ತ್ುುಂಬಾ ಭಾರವಾಗಿದ . ನಾನು ಎತ್ಾಲ್.ಲ I am not lifting it

• ಬಾರದು – Cannot->Used only for prohibiting someone

 Capability – ಸಾಮರ್ಥಯಯ - Can – ಬಲ ಲನು-capable
• This is like ability to achieve a higher goal or task
• It shows ability as in “skill” or “capability”
• I can climb a mountain ನಾನು ಪವಯತ್ವನುನ ಏರ ಬಲ ಲನು
• I cannot do it ನಾನು ಮಾಡಲಾರ /ಮಾಡಲ್ರಯೋನು
• ರಾಮು ಆ ಕಷೆವಾದ ಕ ಲ್ಸವನುನ ಮಾಡ ಬಲ್ಲ Ramu is capable to doing that
difficult work
• ಆ ನ ೋತ್ಾರ ಭಾರತ್ದ ಪಿಧಾನ ಮುಂತಿಿಯಾಗಿ ಬರ ಬಲ್ಲ That leader is capable
of becoming India’s Prime Minister
• ಈ ದ ಡಡ ಅರ ಯನುನ ಎತ್ಾ ಬಲ್ಲನ ೋ ನಿೋನು ? Are you capable of lifting this

• ನಾವು ಬಲ ಲವು We are capable
• ನಿೋನು ಬಲ ಲ You are capable
• ನಿೋವು ಬಲ್ಲಲರ You all are capable
• ಅವನು ಬಲ್ಲ He is capable
• ಅವಳು ಬಲ್ಲಳು She is capable
• ಅವರು ಬಲ್ಲರು They are capable
• ಅದು ಬಲ್ಲದು It is capable
• ಅವು ಬಲ್ಲವು Those are capable
• Use it for capability to do a task or a skill

 Could – Can(past tense-Ability in past)
• Could – ಬಹುದಿತ್ುಾ(ಬಹುದು + ಇತ್ುಾ). Remember to use ಚತ್ುರ್ಥಯ ವಿಭಕ್ತಾ for the
subject
• I could walk two km in my childhood ಚಿಕೆವಯಸದಲ್ಲಲ ನನಗ ಎರಡು kilometer
ನಡ ಯ ಬಹುದಿತ್ುಾ
• ಅವನಿಗ ಹಿುಂದ ಕನನಡಕ ಇಲ್ಲದ ಓದ ಬಹುದಿತ್ುಾ He could read without spectacles

• Could not does not have any Kannada Equivalent in the ಬಹುದು family, so
use past tense negation form of ಆಗು
• ಆಗಲ್ಲಲ್ಲ(colloquial) or ಸಾಧ್ಯವಾಗಲ್ಲಲ್ಲ(bookish)
