Mathematics
VALUE and PLACE VALUE
1. We can now see from our COLUMNS that:
each DIGIT has a VALUE or WORTH.
This depends on which column the digit is located.
2. The NAME of each column is called the PLACE VALUE.

E.g. Let us explore the numeral: 1 7 5

NOTE 1: It has three columns.
NOTE 2: Write out the columns.
NOTE 3: Write in the digits under each column.
Hundreds (H) Tens (T) Ones (O)
1 7 5
Value of 1 = 1 0 0
Value of 7 = 7 0
Value of 5 = 5
NOTE 4: Add the values.
H T O
1 0 0
+ 7 0
5
1 7 5
NOTE 5: Write down the PLACE VALUE for each digit.
1 is under the H so Place Value is HUNDREDS
7 is under the T so Place Value is TENS
5 is under the O so Place Value is ONES

Now do the same for the following numerals:
(1) 399 (2) 402 (3) 830 (4) 972
