Managing Group Conflict

Characteristics of Effective Groups


1. All group members work toward the building of a team.

2. Everyone feels and takes responsibility for the group’s success.

3. The group sees a relationship between their work and rewards.

4. The group knows and uses good group process behaviors.

5. The group learns to deal with conflict and practice these skills.

ƒ Members understand that conflict helps them to get to know each other’s views.
Knowing this, members openly express their disagreements with any other members
regardless of differences in position or status.

ƒ The group members work for collaboration believing that collaborative individuals
can meet their personal goals while simultaneously improving personal relationships
and group process.

6. The group members communicate clearly and directly with each other.

7. Group members value differences.

8. Members are cautious with regard to judging others’ non-verbal behaviors.

9. Members sense when things are not going well and make efforts to self-correct.

10. Members understand how personality preferences can influence group dynamics.

11. Members disagree openly with any group member, but in an agreeable manner.

12. Members make statements that invite questions and answers.

13. Members do not take cheap shots at other group members.
