Background Information for Learners

Solid materials can be mixed/combined with liquid materials.

Some solid materials completely dissolved in the liquid materials
(matunaw), but others do not.
Some solid materials settled at the bottom of the container
(mounlod), while others stayed within the liquid (molutaw).
Some solid materials spread out evenly in the liquid materials,
but some do not. When mixed with liquid some solid materials
changed their size, shape, and color, but some do not.

Describe the changes in properties of materials when exposed to certain conditions such
as temperature or when mixed with other materials; (p. 378)
CODE: S4MT-Ig-h-6
Subtask: What Happens to the Solid Materials when mixed with Liquid Materials

Directions/Instructions/Motivation
When you mix a tablespoon of sugar cube on a glass of water, what
happened to the milk, as well as to the water? Can you easily identify the
mixture?
Was there a change in the solid material as it was mixed with liquid?

II. Pupil’s Activity/ Experimentation

Let us find out what will happen to some solid materials at home when
mixed with liquid materials. You have to do the activity with your elder sister
or brother or with your parents. Be sure to handle things carefully to avoid
accident. Follow carefully the procedure or steps.

You will need:

1 pc. teaspoon, ginger (luy-a), 4 pcs. clear drinking glass, tap water, vinegar
(suka), cooking oil, rubbing alcohol, 1 teaspoon (kutsarita) of: sand, flour (harina),
1 pinch of: salt, pepper, vetsin, dye coloring (jobos), malunggay leaves

Procedure:
1. Get a clean drinking glass.
2. Using the spoon, mix/combine solid materials with the liquid materials listed
in the table.
3. After mixing the materials, observe what happens.
4. Record your observation on the table by checking the proper column. Write
down also the changes you observed when solid and liquid materials are mixed
or combined.
