Introduction
What is well completion?
“The well completion may be considered to be the activities
with objective of which to equip a well with necessary means
to convert a drilled well into a safe and efficient producer or
injector (i.e. production or injection conduit) by developing
interfaces between the reservoir and surface production
systems”.
How to design a completion system or how to complete a
well ……..????

Introduction
Completion of a well depends on many factors:
Well production strategy
Nature of Interface between wellbore and reservoir
Number of tubing strings
Surface location
Stage of completion
Functional and well service requirements
Completion design is a very challenging task. It combines many
engineering and sciences disciplines (e.g physics, chemistry,
mathematics, engineering, geology, hydraulics, material science) and
practical hands‐on wellsite experience.

factors, such as:
Gross production rate;
Well pressure and depth;
Rock properties;
Fluid properties;
Well location.
What is the design output/ End product of

Introduction
Design basis
Fundamentally completion design consists of:
• Specification of bottom hole completion options
• Selection of production tubing/string
• Assessment of completion string or tubing performance
• Assessment well performance
All of above areas starts from conceptual design with
limited information and end up final design once all
criteria meet

Variables that can impose Stress on
Completion Components
• Downhole conditions imposed
by:
• reservoir fluids,
• reservoir depth
• severity of the well path
• Design varies depending on
• Choice of downhole tools
and there setting depths
• Pressure, temperature and
their effect on changing the
fluid properties and weight
applied to the string
Note any changes create
stresses/forces on completion
strings and that need to be
accounted for

Example – Packer force calculations (1)
"tubing wt (7000 lb)" Problem:
Depth: 6000 ft
salt water in annulus Salt water in annular space
annular The packer was set with
8.6 lb/gal
pressure force 7000 lb "tubing weight"
We inject oil with 1000 psi
crude oil in tubing surface pressure in the tubing
6.9 lb/gal (to displace some acid)
Question: will the injection
unseat the packer?
tubing pressure
force If the net force is upward:
the packer will be unseat!
Casing: (OD: 5 ½ in.) ID = 4.91 in.
Tubing OD: 2 3/8‐in. (C‐75, 4.7 lb/ft) ID = 1.99 in.
Internal area of casing: (pi*4.91^2/4) =18.8 in2
Outer area of 2 3/8‐in. tubing (pi*(2+3/8)^2/4= 4.4 in2
Internal Area of of 2 3/8‐in. tubing (pi*1.99^2/4) = 3.1 in2

wt salt water
Annular bhp: (6,000 ft)(0.45psi/ft) =
2,700 psi
6.9 lb/gal

Tubing bhp: (6,000 ft)(0.36 psi/ft)+

Tubing force =(18.8‐3.1 in2)(3,160 psi)=49,600 lb

Flow Couplings
A short thick walled pipe attached with tube
that provide extra strength and protect the
tube from delays erosional failure from
turbulent flow
Usually 2 times wall thickness of tubing
• Available in 3‐5ft, 10ft lengths. The length selected
depends on fluid flow rates (how quickly turbulent
flow is expected to dissipate) and the abrasiveness
of the fluid encountered
• Use around SSV’s, downstream of SSD’s and landing
nipples (i.e. around the devices that reduces flow
diameters, and causes restriction to flow)
Curtin University is a trademark of Curtin University of Technology
CRICOS Provider Code 00301J
Blast Joints
Similar to flow couplings extra thick pipe
used to
• Prevents abrasion on tubing from
perforations
• delays the erosional failure at the
point where fluids enter the well bore
and impinge on the tubing string.
• They have the same internal
diameter as the tubing, but a larger
external diameter (provide extra
strength)
• Available in 20 or 30 ft lengths

CRICOS Provider Code 00301J
Nipple
Short tubular with box and pin threaded connection and
precisely machined and configured internal bore (profile). This
internal profiled bore accept a suitable sized mandrel having
matching external profile
Profile used to locate, lock and seal subsurface flow controls
Used at any point inside a completion string to provide facility
for
• securing any mandrel (eg. SSV) within the nipple.
• sealing capability for the mandrel within the bore of the nipple
• Isolation or plugging of the tubing string for well shut in, workover
for hydraulically setting packers
• landing a ported device which allows communication between the
tubing and the annulus.
• Emergency closure of the tubing or annular flow conduit by remote
or direct control (SSV).
• Downhole regulation or throttling of the flow
• The installation of downhole pressure and temperature recording
gauges

Landing Nipple
Landing nipples are short sections of thick‐walled tubulars
that are machined internally to provide a locking profile and
at least one packing bore
The purpose of a landing nipple is to
• provide a profile at a specific point in the completion string to
locate, lock, and seal subsurface flow controls, either using a
wireline or pumpdown methods
3 main types:
• No‐go nipples
• Selective nipples
• Subsurface safety valve nipples
Curtin University is a trademark of Curtin University of Technology
CRICOS Provider Code 00301J
No‐go Landing Nipples
Point of reduced diameter and operates such that
the outside diameter of the mandrel will be slightly
larger than the minimum inside diameter of the
nipple and hence prevents its passage through the
nipple (ODMandrel>IDNipples)
Prevents passage of larger wireline tools
‘Step down sizing’ – each deeper device must have
smaller ID
No‐go profile (no‐go shoulder) can be above or
below packing bore
Above – top no‐go
Below – bottom no‐go

CRICOS Provider Code 00301J
Selective Landing Nipples
Three methods of selectivity:
Selectivity based upon Variable internal profile
• Match profile to set of locating keys on lock mandrel
• Nipples run as a part of completion tubes in correct
sequence in predetermined selective position (5~7
positions)
Selectivity based upon Setting Tool Selective
• Setting tool activated by nipple profile
• Setting tool includes its removable locking and sealing
device,
• Tool is designed with a system of fixed external profiles
Selectivity based upon pre‐spaced magnets
• Usually comprises
• a lower sections with locking profile and sealing section
contains
• An upper section with two pre‐spaced magnet rings
• Mandrels are locked in position by a mechanical locking
mechanism actuated by a small explosive charges
detonated by by electric circuit when the mandrels lands in
the nipple

Subsurface Safety Valves
Device used to shut off production in an emergency
situation when the well conditions of pressure/flow rate
very from designed values
Two main categories:
• SSCSSV (Subsurface Controlled Subsurface Safety Valves) –
Operated based pre‐set pressure condition (automatic/direct
controlled) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xEb0JIzAfKE
• SCSSV (Surface Controlled Subsurface Safety Valves)‐operated
using a surface control system that feeds hydraulic pressure
directly to the downhole valve assembly through wire line

SSCSSV ‐ Storm Chokes
Operate automatically by changes in well pressure/flow
No hydraulic line required
The valves can be run and installed within specific landing
nipples within the production tubing
Two basic types
• Flow controlled – operate when flow rate exceed preset rate
• Ambient pressure – sense drop in pressure below preset value
Both have different valve closing devices
• Ball type
• Flapper type
• Poppet type
Curtin University is a trademark of Curtin University of Technology

SCSSV
Controlled from surface through hydraulic line that feeds hydraulic
pressure directly to the downhole valve assembly through wire line

• Wireline Retrievable
Also classified by closure mechanism
• Ball
