The symbol ‘Justicia’ or also known as the ‘lady justice’ is a blindfolded woman carrying a sword and a

set of scales. Each item in this symbol has their own meaning. This Justicia is a very common symbol on
courthouses. She herself, symbolizes fairness and equality on the current administration of the law. This
means that criminal justice system shouldn’t have a corruption, favorites, greediness, and prejudice.

Justicia’s blindfold represents integrity and equality, this means that when serving justice, you should be
meted out having no fear or favor, regardless of money, wealth, or power. Connecting it in today’s
criminal justice system, if you committed a certain crime, and privilege enough you can walk out of jail.
But the blindfold in justicia states that you should keep your strong moral principles and serve justice for
everyone who needs it. Justice isn’t only for the rich people.

On the other hand, the scales that she holds represents the weighing of choices and judgments to be
made first before finally making a decision. In today's criminal justice system, we have the power to
weigh the benefits and losses we might have if have to decide on things. And if we have the privilege to
utilize this power, we must give those who don't have it an opportunity because it is also their right.
Since the scales represent the weighing of evidence, the scales signify the that the evidences during
conviction/prosecution should stand on its own.

Lastly, the sword that she holds represent her ability to hold anyone accountable for the sake of
fairness, charging them with what they deserve. It shows that it is a symbol of power and authority. In
today's criminal justice system, anyone with this kind of power can punish anyone who he/she sees fit,
whether the person to be punished is guilty or not. This power must not be abused by any means as it
will lead to corruption of the mind and the heart. It also symbolizes punishment and reveals that justice
can be swift and final.
