What Skills are Todays B- schools Providing For Tomorrow's Managers?
Management is so all-compassing. The skill set is very extensive and it is something that good
managers continue to develop and refine. For B school graduates, the skill gap is a two-way
challenge, while students don’t get commensurate returns on their investments and industry
doesn’t get qualified, properly trained and employable future managers.
Today’s B Schools have to adapt themselves as industry is in the process of transforming traditional
firms into digitally enabled which are service oriented in nature. The innovation in today’s B Schools
depends on training the B school graduates to become industry ready managers, leaders and change
agents than providing a mere employment opportunity, through teaching — learning process, also
called “Outcome Based Education” (OBE).
Today's B-schools provide a three-pronged strategy which is nurture (practice), connect (effective
learning) and grow (teaching and development) to mould 8 school graduates into tomorrow's
managers. Thus, the pedagogy used in today’s B-Schools is practice driven with industry expertise
showcased in the classroom. This pedagogy helps students develop skills and concepts that are
useful in today’s world and reflects on the B-School graduates as enterprise leaders. The B-School
graduates are trained to approach organizational issues by understanding the basic management
concepts and fundamental issues being taught in the course curriculum in addition to imparting
training in the areas of case study-based teaching methods
Management education is going through dramatic changes at a rapid pace. It has traditionally been
focussed on turning out professional managers for existing large enterprises primarily in industries
like manufacturing. This phenomenon has changed in at least two dimensions. The B-school
graduates are not just going into large enterprises, many are starting entrepreneurial ventures.
The second dimension is the mix of industries has moved from manufacturing to services. So,
management education has to delve not only into managing manufacturing businesses, but also
understanding customer needs and requirements, leading knowledge workers, delivering high
quality services, and establishing enterprises. The entire gamut of post-secondary education is
going through a disruptive and transformational change. Technology has made possible new
ways of reaching out to students, interacting with them through mechanisms such as distance
education. Some of the most hallowed concepts of education - such as the idea that everybody
has to be in the same physical space to go through learning - are being challenged.Today's B-Schools predict that very soon cutting-edge education in management will be a blended
mix with few classroom sessions and few sessions delivered online. Hence today’s B-School
education would be a totally different scenario as compared to ten years down the line.
Most of the premier B- Schools today are transforming into a blended mixture of learning which is
discussion based and nota mere lecture based with online learning as a compliment and not as a
substitute.
Moreover, industry-based guest lectures with distinguished alumni and industry leaders are some of
the key sources of transforming students into successful business leaders.
Leadership Skills for Top Management programme includes six sets of essential for:
1. Planning
2, Structuring
3. Motivating
4. Rewarding
5. Institutionalising
6. Managing politics in change initiatives
Others skills include:
Good organization skills, Time management, Decision making skills, Interpersonal and relationship-
building skills, Delegation, Forward-planning and strategy, Expert problem-solving skills, Effective
Communication, Knowledge, Reliability, dealing with pressure, Networking know how, Team building,
Today's B-Schools are more focussed on Agile Management which is currently the main stream
which enables the talent of the graduates to drive strategic initiatives of the organizations. If India
is to deliver on its potential of being the growth engine of the world in the educational stream,
B-Schools need to address the skill challenge by adopting initiatives that are learner-centric and
inspire innovative thinking in addition to encouraging a continuous learning process.
Are the young managers ready to face the challenges of tomorrow?
