1689–91 THE WAR OF THE ENGLISH

SUCCESSION
The attempt of James II to regain the throne and Louis XIV’s
desire to distract
Wiliam III from the war in Flanders are known as the War of
the English
Succession. James II’s attempt to regain his throne began with
his landing in
Ireland in March 1689. The subsequent siege of Londonderry
(April–July 1689)
and his defeat at the battle of the Boyne (1 July 1690) by
William followed. James
fled to France, although fighting continued in Ireland until the
battle of Aughrim
on 12 July 1691 finally put an end to James II’s ambitions.
