Understanding the Self  Cultures and Selves: A

kjjk Cycle of Mutual Constitution

1. What are the three (3) things that you significantly learned from the reading? Please start
by saying ' Before reading the article, I used to think that (insert thought). After reading
the article, I now think that (insert thought)'.
Before reading the article, I used to think that culture is a stable set of beliefs or
values that resides inside people. After reading the article, I now think that I had acquired
a broader and deeper understanding in the context of culture and selves in a cycle of
mutual constitution such as: First, I now understand that culture is not stable and it is
located not only among people but in the world, in patterns of ideas, practices in
situations, products, and artifacts. Secondly, culture helps us have a clear idea about how
individuals perceive themselves and how they correlate to everyone. Also, it is so
important as to be indispensable for us to value the cultures not only ours but of others as
well and acknowledge and understand that people cannot have the same sense of self as
we do. Lastly, Culture influences a lot of factors. For instance, our relationship with other
people such as opting for friends who have the same likes, interests, and beliefs we have.
Also, culture influences our personality traits, emotions, and as well as our achievements
in life. Although culture and self are not just about studying each individual's culture, on
the other hand, it also studies the psychological processes and socio-cultural context that
influence our culture.

2. What three (3) things about the reading are unclear to you?

The article was good and very interesting. However, I find some context still
unclear such as: First, the difference between independence and interdependence is still
unclear to me. Secondly, the mutual constitution of cultures and selves in figure 1 in the
article is still fuzzy for me and I didn’t understand the flow of it or how does each box
affect the self. Lastly, the concept of cultural priming.

3. What three (3) questions that you want to ask about the reading?

After reading the article, I want to ask three questions. First, does culture help us
connect with other people and help us become better? Secondly, what measure do we do
in incorporating culture? Finally, how does cultural priming enable us to understand
multiculturalism and culture?
