Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to describe the microstructure and wear behaviour of tin both
with and without fly ash particles. The materials studied have been prepared by cold pressed
with different pressures ranging from the weight of 4 to 9 tonne. A pin-on-disc wear testing
machine was used to evaluate the wear rate. Wear tests were performed in dry condition at
linear speed of 0.25 m/s at the wear track and load of 1 kg. The study indicates that
microstructural alterations brought about heat treatment could be beneficial in term of
improved wear response of the composites. Different slopes exhibited by the data plots
explained the wear behaviour. The microstructures were examined using both optical
microscopy and scaning electron microscopy. The wear behavior of the composites were
substantiated by the features of wear surfaces morphology. The result shows that the tin-fly
ash composites exhibits lower wear rates as compared with pure tin.
