A320 AMM - ATA 80 (PW11) - Starting (P 85)
80 - (PW11) - STARTING
80-11 - (PW11) - ENGINE STARTING
1. General
A. The engine starting system provides the means for cranking the engine on the ground and in flight, to an
RPM at which an engine start can occur. The engine ground start can be accomplished using air supplied
from the aircraft Auxiliary Power Unit (APU), the cross engine bleed air (air from the other engine) or a
ground cart. In flight, windmill starts may need starter assistance, which could require the APU or cross
engine bleed air.
B. The Electronic Engine Control (EEC) will minimize the time that the starter is free-running so that starter life
is protected. If the EEC logic detects that the starter shaft has sheared by sensing that starter speed is high
without any N2 rotation, it will command the Starter Air Valve (SAV) to close.

CAUTION: MAKE SURE YOU WAITED THE TIME SPECIFIED ON THE MMEL AFTER ENGINE
SHUTDOWN BEFORE YOU START THE ENGINE WITH THE MANUAL OVERRIDE. IF
YOU NOT OBEY THIS INSTRUCTION, DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE CAN OCCUR.
(1) Find on MMEL the time necessary to wait for after engine shutdown.
CAUTION: MAKE SURE THAT YOU WAITED FOR THE TIME SHOWN ON THE MCDU AFTER ENGINE
SHUTDOWN BEFORE YOU START THE ENGINE WITH THE MANUAL OVERRIDE.
IF YOU DO NOT OBEY THIS INSTRUCTION, DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE CAN OCCUR.
NOTE: The ENG 1(2) SAV MANUAL OVERRIDE page (See the Sheet 3 of the Figure) gives the in-
dication of the time until you can manually open the starter valve. If no indication of time is
shown (See the Sheet 4 of the Figure), push the 3R key to know the necessary cooling time
(See the Sheet 5 of the Figure). (Ref. Fig. MCDU Screen) When cooling time is NULL, make
sure that the start valve can be manually open as described in paragraph 4.B.

A. Installation of the Starter Magnetic Chip Collector
(1) Removal of the protection covers
(a) Make sure that you remove all the necessary COVER - PROTECTION to prevent damage to the
engine.
(2) Prepare the chip collector (1) and valve (4), if the valve has to be installed as follows:
(a) Apply lubricant, aircraft turbine engine (Material No. P03-001) to:
· the new PIPC -CSN (80-00-00-00-000) packing (2)
· the new PIPC -CSN (80-00-00-00-000) packing (3) and
· the new PIPC -CSN (80-00-00-00-000) packing (5).
(b) Installation of the packings
CAUTION: WHEN YOU INSTALL THE CHIP DETECTORS, MAKE SURE THAT THE COR-
RECT PACKINGS ARE IN POSITION. IF THEY ARE NOT, THERE IS A RISK OF
OIL LEAKAGE AND ENGINE DAMAGE.
1 Install the packings (2) and (3) on the chip collector (1).
(c) Install the packing (5) on the valve (4).
(3) Install the valve (4) and the chip collector (1) on the starter as follows:
CAUTION: INSTALL THE VALVE APART FROM THE CHIP COLLECTOR. ALSO DO NOT
TORQUE THE VALVE TOO MUCH. IF YOU DO NOT OBEY THESE INSTRUCTIONS,
YOU CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE CHIP COLLECTOR ASSEMBLY.
WARNING: USE GOGGLES WHEN YOU REMOVE OR INSTALL LOCKWIRE. EACH TIME
YOU CUT LOCKWIRE, REMOVE AND DISCARD IT IMMEDIATELY. LOOSE
LOCKWIRE CAN CUT YOU OR MAKE YOU BLIND, AND/OR CAN CAUSE DAM-
AGE.
1 Safety the valve (4) with Lockwire (Material No. P05-289) (Ref. AMM TASK 70-24-00-910-

(d) Install the chip collector (1) on the valve (4).
(e) Push in and turn the chip collector (1) fully clockwise.
(f) Make sure that the chip collector (1) is fully installed and cannot disengage.
(4) Filling of the starter
CAUTION: DO NOT MIX DIFFERENT TYPES OF OIL WHEN YOU ADD OIL BETWEEN OIL
CHANGES. THE CHEMICAL STRUCTURE OF DIFFERENT BRANDS OF OIL CAN
BE SUFFICIENTLY DIFFERENT TO MAKE THEM NOT INTERCHANGEABLE.
(a) Fill the starter with oil (Ref. AMM TASK 80-11-00-600-801) .
(5) Do a check of the valve (4) as follows:
(a) Push the chip collector (1) in, turn it counterclockwise and remove it from the valve (4).
(b) Monitor any oil leakage.
NOTE: A drop or two can come out and then must stop. This is acceptable.
