LESSON 6.3

Factoring Perfect Square Trinomial

Steps for factoring a perfect square trinomial

1. Extract the square root of the first term of the trinomial square to get first term of
the two identical binomial factors.
2. Extract the square root of the last term of the trinomial square to get the last term of the two
identical binomial factors.
3. The sign between the two terms of the two identical binomial factors is the same as the sign
of the middle term of the trinomial square.
4. The two identical binomial factors which can be written as the square of one of them are
the factors of the trinomial squares. Therefore:

Case 1: a2 + 2ab + b2 = (a + b) (a + b) = (a + b)2

Case 2: a2 – 2ab + b2 = (a +b b) (a – b) = (a – b)2

EXAMPLES Factor the following:

1. x2 + 2x + 36 = (x + 6) (x + 6) = (x + 6)2
2. y2 +10y + 25 = (y + 5) (y + 5) = (y + 5)2
3. x2 – 18x + 81 = (x – 9) (x - 9) = (x -y)2
4. 9y2 – 24y + 16= (3y – 4) (3y – 4) = (3y – 4)2
5. -2y + 20y – 50= -2(y2 – 10y + 25)
= -2(y -5) (y – 5)
= -2(y – 5)2
A. LET’S TRY THIS!
Write the missing factors.
1. y2 + 14y + 49 = (y + 7) (y + 7) ---- the missing factor is y + 7
2
2. x + 12x + 36 = (x + 6) (____ )
2
3. x – 16x + 64 = (x – 8) (____ )
2
4. x + 2x + 1 = (x + 1) (____ )
2
5. x – 18x + 81 = (x – 9) (____ )
2
6. 9x – 6x + 1 = (3x – 1) (_____)
2
7. 4m – 4m + 1 = (2m – 1) (_____)
2 2
8. s – 8st + 16t = (s – 4t) (_____)
4
9. a – 14a + 49 = (a2 – 7) (_____)
10. x4 + 24x + 144 = (x2 + 12) (_____)

B. LET’S MOVE ON!

Factor the following Trinomial square.

11. a2 + 8a + 16 = _______________________________________________
12. y2 + 4y + 4 = _______________________________________________
13. b2 + 12b + 36 = _______________________________________________
14. x2 – 18x + 81 = _______________________________________________
15. 4a2 + 16a + 64 = _______________________________________________
16. 9x2 + 14x + 49 = _______________________________________________
17. 36u2 – 18u + 9 = _______________________________________________
18. m4 + 4m + 4 = _______________________________________________
19. t4 – 16t + 64 = _______________________________________________
20. a4 + 24a+ 144 = _______________________________________________

C. LET’S APPLY!

1. A plane flies at a cruising speed of (x + 40) kilometers per hour. At this rate,
How long will it take to fly x2 + 11x + 28 kilometers? Use D = v x t

2. The area of a rectangle is x2 – 3x – 28 units. If the length is x + 4 units, find the width.
Use A = L x W
