CILA 2018

Passionate, determined, and devoted; words that have long characterized the Model
United Nations Club at Saint Thomas. The year that would ultimately change the course
of our school’s reputation was 2014 when the administration, wanting an extra edge
towards the competitivity and status of Saint Thomas, hired our coach Tania Borges,
thus beginning our journey. The school’s journey with MUN starts with Conferencia
Internacional de Las Américas, popularly known as CILA. The newly-fledged team, with
dedication and support, managed to bring home several prizes including Best School for
that first conference.

Since then, Saint Thomas has managed to position itself as one of the best in the
country in terms of MUN.

CILA is the most prominent youth gathering on worldwide issues in Latin America and
the Caribbean. For many years, the event has been organized by the Asociación
Dominicana de las Naciones Unidas (ANU-RD), in association with the Fundacion
Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE), the Global Foundation for Democracy
and Development (GFDD) and the Mexican civil society organization Globalmuners.
Currently, Saint Thomas has participated for five consecutive years, in which the
original team expanded and reduced in multiple occasions, but never losing the
tenacity that characterized it.

The conference’s 14th edition was held from Sunday, October 21 to Thursday, October
25, 2018, at the Convention Center of the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Punta Cana, in
the Dominican Republic with the participation of many of the country’s most well-known
academic institutions such as Saint Thomas, Puntacana International, and Babeque
Secundaria.

CILA 2018 served as a gathering point for more than 500 students looking to address
crucial global challenges, develop their negotiation skills, and show off the fruits of their
hard work. The event simulated 10 committees, 1 for middle schoolers, 1 for college
students, and the remaining 8 for high schoolers.

Saint Thomas was represented by a group of 30 students from 6 th to 12th grade which
participated in 8 committees, including the Security Council, the International Court of
Justice, and the Commission on the Status of Women.

The team brought home 7 individual awards in 6 of the committees:

The school’s dedication and hard work paid off, allowing the school to take the
Institución Distinguida award in the large schools category.
