Project Description:
Protection of an induction motor (IM) against possible problems,
such as overvoltage, over current, over temperature, stator winding fault, bearing fault, broken
rotor bar fault, single phase fault, under voltage, unbalanced fault, blocked rotor fault, ground
fault, over load occurring in the course of its operation is very important, because it is used
intensively in industry as an actuator. Different protection methods are used to protect
motor. However, the computer-based protection method requires an analog- to-digital
conversion (ADC) card, and the PIC-based protection method does not visualize the electrical
parameters measured.
Our final year project we developed PLC based protection method. If only a
PLC is used as a protection relay for a motor, it costs more. But the use of a PLC can be the
right choice if it is considered in an automation system in order not to use extra
microprocessor such as a PIC. Many industries use PLC in automation processes to diminish
production cost and to increase quality and reliability. PLC-based protection method
developed costs less, provides higher accuracy as well as safe and visual environment
compared with the classical, the computer, and the PIC-based protection system.PLC based
protection method detect the fault which is occurred in motor and s h o w n t h e warning
messages on the computer screen, also monitoring the condition of motor, and also remotely
control the motor.
Block Diagram:

Three phase induction motor produce a rotating magnetic field. This rotating field provides the
basis of operation for all A.C. machines. It is obtained by distributing a set of three phase
windings about the periphery of the motor core. When three phase currents flow in these
windings, the time and space phase shifts resulting in mmf wave which has the appearance of
rotating at a constant angular velocity in the air gap between the rotor and stator. This rotating
wave produces rotational motion. This mechanical energy is used in industry to perform different
function.

Circuit which consist of over voltage relay, over current relay, temperature
sensors and condenser microphone detect if over voltage ,over current, temperature and noise
fault occurred in the motor and give input to PLC.
Programmable Logic Controllers are used in commercial and industrial applications.
The operation of PLC is in the following:

Step1:

Read the external input signal, such as the status of over voltage relay, over current relay, temperature sensor and
condenser microphone.

Step2:

Using microprocessor to execute the calculation of logic, sequence, timer, counter and formula according to the
status and the value of input signal read in the step1 and pre-write programmers’ saved inner to get the
corresponding output signal, such as to control the motor and gives the message to computer screen.

Computer is used to shown the warning message, monitoring the condition of motor and
remotely control the motor.
