EXPERIMENT NO.2
TIME OF SETTING, GILLMORE

DISCUSSION:
Time of setting determines the time that elapses before the paste ceases to be fluid and
plastic and also the time required for it to harden.

Cement is any material that hardens and becomes highly adhesive after application. The
phrase “cement” is often used interchangeably with “glue” and “adhesive”; in architectural and
building construction the phrase usually relates to a finely powdered, manufactured substance
consisting of gypsum plaster, or Portland cement that hardens and adheres after being mixed with
water. Cements are used for numerous purposes, such as binding sand and gravel together with
Portland cement to form concrete, for uniting the surface of various materials, or for coating areas
to protect them from chemical attack. Cements are made in many compositions for a broad variety
of uses.
What is Portland cement?
Portland cement is developed through experiment, experience and practice by blending
materials containing calcium, aluminum, iron and silica. It is the material produced by burning to
incipient fusion( 1400 C -1700 C) , a properly proportioned mixture of argillaceous and calcareous
materials, the burnt product called clinker is mixed with 2.5-5 % gypsum and pulverized to form
Portland cement.
Both common setting time test, the Vicat needle and the Gillmore Needle, define the initial
set and final set based on the time at which a needle of particular size and weight either penetrates a
cement paste to a given depth or fails to penetrate a cement paste sample.

Time of setting by Gillmore needle – initial set occurs when 113.4 grams of Gillmore needle (2.12
mm in diameter) fails to penetrate. Final set occurs when a 453.6 grams
Gillmore needle (1.06mm in diameter) fails to penetrate.
ASTM c 159 Specified Set Times by Test Method
Test Method Set Type Time Specification
Vicat Initial ≥45 minutes
Final ≤375 minutes

Gillmore Initial ≥60 minutes

Final ≤600 minutes

OBJECTIVE:

To determine the time where the cement paste will harden using the Gillmore Apparatus.

APPARATUS:

 Gillmore apparatus
 Portland cement – 300 g
 Graduated cylinder
 Weighing scale
 Potable water
 2 pcs trowel ( 4-6 in )

PROCEDURE:

Making the Cement Paste:

1. Take the weighing scale and set to zero.
2. Take a pan and tare the instrument.
3. Measure 300 gram sample of cement.
4. Take the cylinder and measure 80 ml. of water.
5. Now start making the paste of cement. It should be taken care that the time of making
paste doesn’t exceed 1 minute. Also note the time of making paste.

Molding Test Specimen

1. Quickly form the cement paste into a ball with gloved hands and toss six times from one
hand to the other, maintaining the hands about 150 mm (6 in.) apart.
2. Press the ball, resting in the palm of the hand, into the plate held
on the table until it reach the ½” thick.
3. Remove the excess to attain 3’ diameter.
5. Smooth the top of the specimen, if necessary, with one or two light touches of the
pointed end of the trowel.

COMPUTATION/DATA:

Starting time: 9:54 am

Initial set 11:09 pm

Final set 1:39 pm

CONCLUSION:
Therefore, we conclude that the ratio of water and cement in order to achieve the normal
consistency of cement paste depends on the result of the Normal Consistency Test and it also varies
with the way of mixing, time of mixing and the room temperature.
