INTERACTION

IN SLA
Hamilton Stewart Sáenz Sarmiento

Universidad Industrial de Santander

What is interaction and which
is its purpose in SLA?
Conversational interaction
facilitates language
acquisition because it
connects input, internal
learner capacities and output
in productive ways.
MICHAEL LONG
INPUT (EXP. TO LANGUAGE) + PRODUCTION OF LANGUAE (OUTPUT)

+ FEEDBACK = INTERACTION

Interaction involves a number of components.

They are mainly negotiation, recasts and

feedback.
WHAT IS
NEGOTIATION?
NEGOTATION PROVIDES THE MEANS FOR

PARTICIPANTS TO RESPOND APROPRIATELY TO ONE

ANOTHER'S UTTERANCE AND TO REGAIN THEIR

PLACES IN A CONVERSATION AFTER ONE OR BOTH

HAVE 'SLIPPED'."

- G AS S & S E LIN K ER
1. Questioning particular

utterances.

"You say there's

been a lot.."

2. Requesting

conversational help.

"Could you spell one of those

words for me?"

VYGOTSKY
Social interaction plays an

important role in the learning

process. He proposed the ZPD,

where learners construct the

new language through socially

mediated interaction.
KRASHEN
He assumed that natural

internal mechanisms

operate upon

comprehensible input

which leads to language

competence. According to

Krashen's input hypothesis,

language acquisition takes

place during human

interaction in the target

language enviroment.
