The following is a poem I’ve entitled “The Grammar Lion”, providing a glance into what it

means to be a student here, and the bonds we share as part of the Auckland Grammar
community.
The Grammar Lion

As the amber rays of morning sun gleam on Mountain Road,

As does the river of students begin to flow into the palatial main hall, and pool into its oaken,
historic seats

Young men, past and present, gaze upon the names encompassing the great hall
Awestruck, inspired by the feats they symbolize
We hope that one day we too may be remembered this way

The names are testaments to this school, and further validate the hard work of our
predecessors
They’ve tended and cared for the school for 150 years,
Watching, teaching, learning, growing, coaxing, playing, laughing
The humble sprout, now wizened to a knowing oak

Grammar stands strong, a grecian statue which has stood the test of time, and has in turn been
shaped by it,
Retaining its fundamental beauties

But below the hard surface of its marble skin, is life

We, the proud lifeblood of Grammar, surge strong through the mighty lion
Offering our vitality and service as it has offered its spirit and knowledge to us

The Lion resides in each of us

For it is more than just a golden crest

It is a message to the outside world that we are here, and we strive and we reach and we
struggle and we flourish
It is a mentality of unity, family, resolve, and victory
It is an imperishable golden thread that binds the hearts of Grammar across generations,
ethnicities, countries, and time
Unbreakable, unsurpassed, timeless
