Graduation time now scheduled for morning

The time of spring graduation this year
has been changed from 2:30 p.m. to 9:30
a.m.
Provost Katherine Whatley said the rea-
son for the change is to make the ceremony
more enjoyable for students, their families
and faculty.
“The goal with this change is to make
the experience as positive and comfortable
as possible,” Whatley said.
Whatley said the suggestion for the
time change came right after last year’s
ceremony.
“We hope to avoid the heat and threat of
thunderstorms that comes with holding the
ceremony in the afternoon,” Whatley said.
The heat was also a major contributor
to the reason for the time change. Whatley
said that while student robes are fairly light
material, many faculty robes are heavy and
dark-colored material.
“We want as much faculty representa-
tion at graduation as possible,” Whatley
said.
The group that made the decision to
change the time of the graduation cer-
emony included Whatley, the President’s
Cabinet, Administrative Assistant Noreen
Salmon and Chief of Staff Whit Whittaker.
Whatley said that the time change is
meant to be permanent.
“We will of course readdress the deci-
sion if it does not work well or we receive a
lot of negative feedback, but we think it is
something worth trying for at least a couple
years,” Whatley said.
Whatley said that faculty feedback has
been overwhelmingly positive and only six
or seven students have voiced concerns.
Senior Brandon Moore said that he is
not a fan of the time change.

Whatley said she recognizes the fact that
some families will have to travel to Berry
on Friday and stay the night.
“You only graduate once, and in the
long run a hotel room probably won’t seem
like a very big cost if it means the overall
experience will be more comfortable and
more enjoyable,” Whatley said.
Senior Jessica Rogers said the time
change is not a big deal.
“It’s not terribly inconvenient,” Rogers
said. “My main concern is that I really want
to graduate outside rather than in the Cage,
so if this makes it more likely to be outside
then I’m happy.”
Whatley said the decision to announce
the time change at the start of the spring
semester was made to avoid confusion
with the fall graduation. The fall gradua-
tion started at 2:30 p.m.
Whatley said the lunch that has pre-
ceded the ceremony in past years will not
take place afterwards.
“By having the lunch after graduation,
students and families have the opportunity
to hang out and relax, but students will still
have plenty of time to move out of their
dorms by check out time,” Whatley said.

“There has been a lot more student activity in the form
of the Green Team, SAVE and student workers in the Sus-
tainability department,” Elsberry said. “Student awareness
and participation has a big effect on our school grade.”
Elsberry said other improvements that earned Berry a
better grade include tray-less dining, increased participa-

The End and Ends of Etiquette

Just a little over a week
ago, Berry brought in
someone to lecture on
etiquette. This raises an
important question: Is
etiquette so forsaken or
misunderstood at Berry
(or in society at large)
that we need a speaker
to come and explain it
to us? The fact that such
a speaker even exists
implies that we have
some problem that needs
to be addressed.
It’s become cliché to observe
that common sense and com-
mon courtesy are no longer so
little bit of leeway with this one
because our classes tend to be
more informal, which allows
us to wear our pajamas to class
if we so desire. However, there
come times for which we must
be able to appropriately assess
the degree of formality of an
occasion. This is a vital skill for
life after college when we will
be thrust into the professional
world, mired in the expecta-
tions of others and hopefully
capable of coping with a much
more judgmental environment.
Most appropriate attire rules are
commonsensical. You wouldn’t
wear a mini-skirt or Chacos to
a funeral, so why show up at an
interview in them?

Opinions without apologies

feel are worth evaluating and
questioning, such as the recent
demise of the “thank-you hand
wave”, formerly employed
while driving to express appre-
ciation to another driver who
let you in their lane. It’s com-
pletely illogical that people
who have nothing better to do
than change the radio station
would refrain from giving that
little wave out of laziness.
It may seem like a petty
request—after all, we don’t
show roadway courtesy to
other drivers simply because
we expect to receive something
in return. We understand that
those in a lane that is merg-
ing must be integrated into

want others to show us the
same consideration when the
roles are reversed. The wave
is just something extra thrown
in to let us know that our kind-

recognition that we did some-
thing nice for another person.
But there are other issues in
which our generation seems to
slack off. A major offender: dress
code. Yes, in college we have a

appreciated, even if we already
knew that the person liked our
gift.
With common courtesy on
the decline, maybe we do need
a “courtesy coach” to teach us
the practice and purpose of
etiquette. Some students are
evidently willing to take the
time to learn proper manners
in the interest of improving
themselves or better marketing
themselves in the job market.
Some of us have recognized

remedy for it. The question
is this: When will a desire for
a polished image and polite
demeanor become a predomi-
nant feature in our generation?

Before you read any further, I
would like to direct your atten-
tion to the very top of this page.
There is a word that tirelessly
holds down the fort in the space
between the page number and
the date every week. I’ll give
you a hint: It’s the name of the
section.
This is the opinions section
and as condescending as it may
sound, I feel the need to reiterate
this. This is the one place in the
newspaper where it is perfectly
all right (even encouraged), for
the writing to be biased.
The Carrier’s opinions sec-
tion is a place for the Berry
College community to express
views in a constructive manner,
and as long as I am editor, I will
ensure that it stays that way. It
is an outlet for all of us at Berry,
not just members of the student
media.
And I believe that an opinion
is never something to apologize
for. An opinion is a beautiful
thing, and although everyone
has one, yours is completely
unique to you. You generated it,
deriving it from personal expe-
riences, morals, education and
principles.
Developing an opinion is an
interesting process. It can take
seconds or it can take years,
but you did it all by yourself
and nothing can take that away
from you. For example, I don’t
have a solid opinion on stem
cell research or the long-term

We all react to and process
things differently. No two opin-
ions are exactly alike, because
no two people have identical
life experiences. At the same

to deny the right of an opin-
ion to others. A wise man once
told me that there are no stupid
questions, only stupid people.
I feel the exact same way about
opinions.
The free sharing of ideas
is one of the many things that
make our country incred-
ible. Although there are a few
parameters to our freedom of
speech, I know we are blessed
to live in a country where free
speech, press, petition, religion
and assembly are rights granted
to us, because those things lead
to dialogue. Isn’t that how we
learn from each other?
I challenge you to consider
someone else’s opinion over the
course of this week. You don’t
have to vocalize your observa-
tion—it’s a thought exercise. If
you hate being around people,
try doing it while watching tele-
vision. “It’s stupid” and “He’s
right” don’t count. Think out-
side of your box, get over your-
self and think about where this
other perspective came from.
You don’t have to like it or
agree, but I think it’s important
for all of us to see how everyone
else sees the world every once
in a while.
Is it true that ignorance
abounds? Well yes, because it’s
impossible to know everything
about everything.
Personally, I hate Crocs
as footwear, think President
Barack Obama is a less-than-
stellar president, love the 2011
Chevy Camaro, prefer white
gold over yellow gold and am
generally annoyed by country
music.
Do you have to like it? Nope.
That’s your opinion and there’s
absolutely nothing I can do
about it. How cool is that?

Revamping race relations

most tolerant or diverse place in the
world, I have recently discovered that
a surprising number of people at Berry
(not only students, but also faculty and
administrators) can be insensitive to
racial issues. This issue has been the
topic of numerous conversations I’ve
had with my mother ever since my
freshman year.
I came to Berry with a big splash,

people would help ease the transition.
The good interactions I had with
my peers outweighed the bad until my
interaction with “her.” Though I don’t
remember her name or even what she
looks like, I do remember her approach-
ing me with her best Sheneneh imper-
sonation saying, “Hey girl, what it is?” I

on her face was a puzzled one; it was

ment in my response.
Social interactions like the aforemen-
tioned should never take place. In spite
of Berry’s demographic, black students
should not have to deal with this issue
as often as we do. Most students and
faculty at Berry are tolerant and respect-
ful of racial differences, but the few
who are not make a bad case for every-
one else, just as the few African Ameri-
can women and men who do not value
education, but cars, money, bitches and
¶KRHV· SHUSHWXDWH QHJDWLYH VWHUHRW\SHV
that are hard to escape. This insensitiv-
ity tells us that when it comes down to
it, African Americans can only be three
things: the over-sensationalized, hyper-
VH[XDOL]HG SHRSOH DV SRUWUD\HG E\ WKH
media, the people of the civil rights
movement and slaves.
And speaking of slavery.
In one of my education classes, we
were given the task of coming up with
an activity to teach the Georgia Perfor-
mance Standard in social studies for the
4th grade. One of my classmates sug-
gested that the students of their class
pretend to be slaves trying to escape to
freedom. Their homeroom would be the
“plantation,” the hallways would act as
the “underground railroad” and Class-
room X would represent freedom.
As soon as the words left the stu-
dent’s lips and the professor nodded
in possible concurrence, my hand went

up. “That’s not a good idea,” I said. I
went on to say that educators need to
understand the demographic of their
classroom and spoke of my own child-

lar lesson and of how traumatizing that
was for me.
The professor, after reminding me
there were white slaves and compar-
ing indentured servitude to the forced
labor of African Americans, asked me,
the sole African American in the class-
room, to recommend a way of handling
the classroom situation. I replied that
teachers need to be mindful of two
things: The feelings of their minority
students and the effects of spotlight-
ing them in the classroom. Spotlighting
implies that the opinions of students of
FRORUDUHLQÁXHQFHGVRKHDYLO\E\UDFH
that any one student can represent the
HQWLUHJURXS,ÀJXUHGP\VXEWOHKLQWV
would have my professor back off the
race issue, but boy was I wrong.
7KH QH[W ZHHN DQRWKHU FODVVPDWH
asked what they should call African
Americans, citing that they are not from
Africa but they are Americans. My pro-
fessor must have viewed this as a teach-
able moment and proceeded to ask me
what I preferred to be called. Although
I tried to make a joke out of it while tell-
ing my classmates the truth as I know
it, I was happy my peers felt comfort-
able enough to ask questions and forgo
making assumptions.
I did not like, however, my name
being brought into the equation simply
because I was the sole African American
in the classroom. I also did not appreci-
ate the professor gesturing towards me
every time he mentioned slavery, refer-
ring to slaves as “your forefathers” or
using my name to preface the statement,
“Chauncey, please forgive me, but I
don’t think Black History Month should
be celebrated just one month; I think it
should be celebrated all year round.” It
is true all cultures should be celebrated
year round, but implying that I would
be offended by the statement for no rea-
son other than my race put me in a posi-
tion in which I did not volunteer to be
as a student in the class.
And while I understand the point
of the lesson at its core, I found myself
wondering if and how things would be
different if I were not in the classroom.
If my color was that of the majority,
would the slave game be considered
acceptable? Would comments about
Black History Month still be made?
I honestly feel that this situation is a
shame, since as future educators our

The man with the golden voice heads
to rehab. Not the beginning of an inspira-
tional story most want to hear, but never-
theless true. Ted Williams, father, former
radio personality and recovering addict,
was spotted by Columbus Dispatch vid-
eographer Doral Chenoweth on the side of
the road on Hudson Street near the ramp
leading to I-71 in Columbus, Ohio on Jan.
3, 2011. Homeless, disheveled and wear-

“God-given gift” he proclaims he has on
a tattered piece of cardboard dressed with

That same day, the video of Williams
went viral, hosting over 21 million views
on YouTube. Two days later, Williams
appeared on the popular WNCI radio
morning show, “The Dave and Jimmy
Show” and was interviewed by the Early
Show from their studios. On Jan. 6, Wil-
liams made an appearance on the “Today
Show” in which he was interviewed by
Matt Lauer and Meredith Vieira. The inter-
view, laced with remnants of Williams past,

Lady Vikings defend home court

The Lady Vikings narrowly

defeated the Shorter Lady
Hawks Monday night, 74-73, in
overtime.
The victory was not an easy
one. Shorter pulled ahead of
Berry early in the game, but the
home team worked their way to a
30-26 lead at halftime.
During the second half, the
Lady Hawks tied the score. In

sending the game into an extra

In overtime Berry scored nine
points to Shorter’s eight. Brittany
Coughlan drained a three-pointer
and the Lady Vikings kept the
Lady Hawks in check to secure
the victory.
Second-year coach Stephanie
Dunn said that she is happy with
the team’s performance.
“I’m proud of them for the
way that they competed…they
didn’t back down, they stayed
in there and really fought hard,”
Dunn said.
Berry entered the rivalry game
down three players due to inju-
ries this season. Seniors Erica
Crumley, Kate Ross and Kendall
Davis watched from the sideline
on Monday.
Compton said that the loss of

Dunn said that the players’
perseverance and determination-

“At times when things
could’ve gone the other way they
stepped up and made big shots,
and you know, I’m just proud of
them,” Dunn said.
She also said that the Berry-
Shorter rivalry helped the team
get into the competitive spirit.
“[The players] feed off of a
big game and get excited,” Dunn
said. “I knew that they would be
excited and come out and play
hard.”
Compton also said the rivalry
was important.
“A big part of preparing for

tradition and competition of [the
Berry-Shorter] game is passed
down to the younger players,”
Compton said. “I feel this is very
important in passing down the
excitement and rivalry, so that
others can continue to enjoy.”
Crumley, who has been side-
lined by a recent injury, said that
she is proud of her teammates.
“I think that lots of differ-
ent people stepped up at crucial
moments during the game. I
loved the energy and teamwork
we exhibited [on Monday],”
Crumley said.
Berry won its game on
Wednesday night against Young
Harris College, 67-49.

The Berry Vikings came up short
against the Shorter Hawks Monday, losing
62-58.
Students from both schools crowded
the stands, some dressed up in Oxford
shirts and ties, others in T-shirts adorned

Both sides periodically erupted into
chants, often times taunts such as “Shorter
High School!” in an effort to boost their
respective team’s morale.
The game began with the Hawks in pos-

tied the score. Although Berry scored 21

scored 12 points in the second half alone,
including two three-pointers, to help Berry
recapture the lead, but the competition

overs, said he felt Berry held their own
against a strong team.
“I thought we played very well defen-
sively – they obviously had an advantage
over us in size and athleticism and we
played very well,” Holloman said.
Freshman forward Cass LeBlanc, who
made two three-pointers, which accounted
for all of his points, commented on the
game.
“It’s tough losing, especially to
[Shorter], but we played hard,” LeBlanc
