SHAPED PATCHES

MATERIALS:
TEAR AWAY STABILIZER (I used cut away, if you do not mind a bit of scissor
work.)
MEDIUM TO HEAVY WEIGHT COTTON FABRIC (I used bull denim.)
MASKING OR MAGIC TAPE
EMBROIDERY THREADS
OPTIONAL: IRON ON VILENE(THICK/HEAVY WEIGHT) OR PATCH GLUE
SHARP POINTED SCISSORS
4”x4” hoop

METHOD:
Hoop up your stabilizer, place the hoop in the machine and start the stitch
out. The first stitch out is a running stitch onto the stabilizer. This is to help
with centering the fabric.

Remove the hoop from the machine after the first running stitch has
finished. Add a piece of fabric to the hoop and stick it down.
Return the hoop to the machine and stitch the fabric down with the second
running stitch.
Stitch out the design with all of its colors, stopping once the zigzag tack
down has finished stitching out but before the satin stitch starts.

Now that the zigzag tack down stitch has completed. Remove the hoop
from the machine and trim the excess fabric from the design.

OPTIONAL STEP:
Turn the hoop over so the underside is facing you. Stick down a piece of
IRON ON VILENE. Remember that the SHINY SIDE of the IRON ON VILENE
must face OUTWARDS and the dull side must go against the stabilizer.
Return the hoop to the machine and stitch out the satin stitch.
Now that the design is complete, remove it from the stabilizer and the
hoop. And you have you patch.
NOTE ON ATTACHING THE PATCH TO GARMENT OR ITEM
I have used the iron on Vilene for my patches but there is a variety of other
products that work the same as the iron on Vilene. Remember to follow the
manufacturer’s instructions on using their product.

Patch glue is another easy to use product that is applied to the patch before it is
applied to the garment or item. Products such as Patch Attach are commonly
used. Remember to follow the manufacturer’s instructions on using their product.

I have used the iron on Vilene as it gives a professional finish to the patch and
makes it easier for the customer to attach to the garment or item.
