PRODUCE FINISHERS (COC 4)

The COC 4 consists of a competency that a person must achieve in caring for finishers. It includes
preparing animals for finishing; proper management and feeding finishers, providing care and monitoring the
health of the animals and profitable marketing of hogs either as replacements stocks/breeders or market hogs.

A person who has achieved Competency is competent to produce finishers and shall be awarded
Certificate of Competency in Animal Production (Swine) NC II. The Unit of competency comprising this COC
includes:

TRAINING DELIVERY

The delivery of training should adhere to the design of the curriculum. Delivery should be guided by the
principles of competency-based training.
a) Course outline is based on competency standards/training regulations;
b) Training delivery is learner-centered and should accommodate individualized and self-paced learning
strategies;
c) Training can be done on an actual workplace setting or on a simulated workplace;
d) Assessment is based in the collection of evidence of the performance of work;
e) Assessment of competency takes the trainee’s knowledge and attitude into account but requires
evidence of actual performance of the competency as the primary source of evidence;
f) Training program allows for recognition of prior learning (RPL) or current competencies; and
g) Training completion is based on satisfactory performance of all specified competencies indicated in
the progress chart.

TRAINEE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Trainees or students should possess the following requirements:


• Can communicate in Basic English either oral or written; and
• Can perform basic mathematical computation

Prior to accreditation, a training provide must have a Memorandum of Agreement with private swine
farm with a at least five-sow level farm as practice farm/workplace for the trainees.

TRAINER’S QUALIFICATIONS

Trainers shall be required to be certified to the National Certificate for which qualification they will train.
TESDA shall provide an online training on Plan Training Session and Facilitate Learning Sessions to the
potential trainers.1
Minimum requirements:
 Holder of a National Certificate in the Qualification s/he will teach; and
 Has completed the following units of Trainer’s Methodology Level I:
i. Plan Training Sessions;
 Identifying learner’s training requirements
 Prepare session plan
 Prepare instructional materials
 Prepare assessment instruments (Institutional)
 Organize learning and teaching resources ;and
ii. Facilitate Learning Sessions
 Prepare training facilities /resources
 Conduct pre-assessment
 Facilitate training session
 Conduct competency assessment
 Review delivery of training session

MODULE TITLE : PRODUCING FINISHERS

UNIT CODE : AFF621219

MODULE DESCRIPTOR : This module covers the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to
care for finishers effectively and efficiently. It includes preparing
animals for finishing; proper management and feeding finishers,
providing care and monitoring the health of the animals and
profitable marketing of hogs either as replacements
stocks/breeders or market hogs.

LO1. PREPARE ANIMALS FOR FINISHING

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA:

1. Suitable growers are selected for finishing based on weight and age.
2. Finishers building are cleaned and disinfected following enterprise procedures.
3. Materials and equipment are adjusted and supplied according to work requirements.
4. Growers are grouped based on industry standards and enterprise specifications.
5. Growers are transferred based on the Minimum Standards on the Welfare of Pigs and
Code of Good Animal Husbandry Practices (GAHP).

 Selection or grouping of starters for finishing

LO2. MAINTAIN CONDUCIVE ATMOSPHERE AND FACILITIES

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA:

1. Pen is cleaned regularly following hygienic procedures.


2. Proper temperature is monitored and provided based on the Minimum Standards on the
Welfare of Pigs and Code of Good Animal Husbandry Practices (GAHP).
3. Height of drinkers are checked and adjusted to ensure proper functioning based on the
Minimum Standards on the Welfare of Pigs and Code of Good Animal Husbandry
Practices (GAHP).
4. Enough floor space is provided based on the Minimum Standards on the Welfare of Pigs
and Code of Good Animal Husbandry Practices (GAHP).
5. Weak animals are isolated based on industry standards.

1. Feeders are checked and adjusted to ensure proper functioning.


2. Animals are fed according to a standard feeding system.
3. Feed ration is adjusted and shifted based on farm protocols and physiological growth.
4. Medicated feeds are withdrawn according to veterinarian instructions.

LO4. MAINTAIN HERD HEALTH CARE AND MEDICATION PROGRAM

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA:

1. Changes in animal behavior are monitored following Animal Welfare Act and GAHP.
2. Changes in posture of animal is monitored Animal Welfare Act and GAHP.
3. Changes in respiration of animal is monitored Animal Welfare Act and GAHP.
4. Changes in skin color is monitored Animal Welfare Act and GAHP.
5. Uniformity of stocks is monitored following enterprise protocol.
6. Vaccination and medication programs are implemented based on veterinarian
instructions.

CONTENTS:

 Monitoring the changes in:


o behavior
o posture;
o Skin color
o Uniformity of stocks
 Safety consciousness on vaccine handling and other biological supplies and materials
 Accuracy in medication and treatment of hog’s diseases
 Perseverance and industriousness on care and management of the general heard

LO5. PREPARE ANIMALS FOR MARKETING

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA:

1. Animal weight is determined using weighing scales.


2. Marketable animals are prepared and reserved following marketing requirements and
procedures.
3. Loading facility and ramp are prepared with reference to Animal Welfare Act.
4. Animals are moved to loading facility following Animal Welfare Act.
5. Ensure the transportation vehicle is cleaned and disinfected prior to entering farm
premises in line with GAHP.

CONTENTS:

 Care and management of the general heard


 Selection of good finishers,
 Marketable age and weight of finishers
 Preparation, reservation and loading of markettabl animals
 Animal Welfare Act
 Honesty in marketing and financial transactions
 Computation of:
o feed conversion efficiency
