Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

This lesson uses a Universal Design of Learning (UDL) framework because it is composed of all three
principles that make up a UDL. This lesson and activity allow students to use recognition, action and
expression, and engagement to learn concepts taught in the classroom. In this lesson, the first
principle, recognition, is used to help ensure that all students are given diverse options for
perception, comprehension, language, mathematical expressions, and symbols while learning
geometric definitions needed to perform transformations. In addition, to this lesson, the second
principle, action and expression, is used to help ensure that all students are given a variety of options
for physical action, communication, expression, and executive functions while learning geometric
definitions needed to perform transformations. Finally, the third principle, engagement, is used to
help ensure that all students are given different options for self-regulation, recruiting interest, and
sustaining effort and persistence while learning geometric definitions needed to perform

transformations. Google Slides is a good basic productivity tool to use, that allows students to create
their own product involving mathematical concepts. This tool is good to use, when implementing a
UDL in the classroom, for students to understand key concepts needed to perform transformations
because it can help students create a product using their unique understandings of these
mathematical concepts.

Lesson idea implementation:

Since this standard is the very first standard of Geometry, I as the teacher will start off by introducing
the new unit, Transformations in the Coordinate Plane. In this lesson, students need to be able to
understand, define, and explain specific geometric definitions, given above, that are needed to
perform transformations. Once I have introduced the new unit, I will split students up into groups of 4
and give them a list of words. Students will be asked to spend about 30-35 minutes creating a google
slide presentation of these words in greater depth. Since the students are using Google slides, every
student will be able to collaborate on the presentation at the same time on their own individual
computers. In this presentation, Students will be asked to define, give an example, give a
counterexample, explain why the counterexample is not an example, and create a problem for each
word on the list. While students are working in their groups, I, as the teacher will be walking around
to observe, promote, and access student learning about the definitions.

After each group completes their presentation using Google slides, each group will give a 5-minute
presentation on 2 of the slides/words assigned randomly by me, using the presentation they created on
google slides, to share their ideas/findings. As each group is presenting, I, as the teacher, will ask
them questions that help promote higher order thinking about the definitions and allow me to provide
feedback. In addition, while groups are presenting, other groups will be checking their google slides
presentations to ensure they have the same findings for the words each group presents. Once every
group is done presenting, the whole class will come together to create general definitions for each
word given on the original list for the last 10-15 minutes of class or the beginning of class the next
day, if more time is needed. This is also a time that will allow me to provide feedback of the
definitions. This will ensure every student is on the same page about the definitions learned in class to
continue in the unit, Transformations in the Coordinate Plane.

Reflective Practice:

Reflecting on this lesson plan, I feel the activities we did during class were very beneficial to the
students. The students were able to analyze, understand, apply, and be creative with learning
definitions needed to perform transformations. I feel one way I could expand the lesson is by
incorporating a way for students to utilize and share this information outside of the classroom. This
tool allows sharing, but the activity does not promote sharing to people other than the people inside
of the classroom. One way I could possibly enhance this is by having students in each group do a
voice over presentation and share on YouTube, (with parental consent). This would allow my lesson
to increase a Loti level to a Loti level 5 because it will to help enhance student learning even further
outside of the classroom. I am always open to new basic productivity tools that can benefit and
enhance student learning, creativity, and understanding. Therefore, I do feel there are many other
basic productivity tools, aside from Google slides, out there that can help benefit students even more.
With that being said, I do feel Google Slides is a great basic productivity tool to use because of all the
features it allows students to do.
