Questions
1. The figure Q1 is showing a RC DC circuit including 2 batteries, 1 resistor, 1
capacitor and a switch which is connected at position 1 from 0 to 7.5ms, then
connected at position 2 after 7.5ms. Assume the capacitor is fully discharged at
0ms.

2
E1 = 4V R = 800Ω
E2 = 10V
C =4µF

Figure Q1
i. Derive the voltage charging equations VC1 & VC2 from the first principle
below:
E = V R + VC
VR = iCR
dVC
i C =C
dt
Also, state the boundary conditions of VC2
ii. Plot the graph of VC against time from 0ms to 30ms.
iii. Derive the current charging equations IC2 from the result of (i).
iv. Plot the graph of IC against time from 0ms to 30ms and indicate the values
of the sharp turning points.

2. A 125 mm diameter pipe delivering water at a rate of 0.150m /min is connected
to another 75 mm diameter pipe. These two pipes are installed horizontally.
The water pressure P1 at the large pipe is 2 kN/m2.
a) Determine the flow velocities at the large and small pipe.
b) Show the following expression for determining the water pressure P 2 in the
small pipe by deriving from the Bernoulli’s equation in 3 steps at least.
Expression

ρ [ v 21−v 22 ]
{
P 2= P 1 +
2 }
c) Determine the water pressure P2 in N/m2

3. An U-tube manometer is connected to a closed tank shown below Figure Q3,

connecting oil have a density of 850 kg/m3, the pressure of the air above the oil
being 3800 Pa. If the pressure at point A in the oil is 14000 Pa and the
manometer fluid has a specific gravity of 3, determine

0.8 m

Figure Q3

a) the depth of oil, Z1; and

b) the differential reading of Z2 on the manometer.

c) A hole is drilled with 50 mm in diameter at the bottom of the tank. By using Bernoulli’s
equation, calculate the velocity of the oil flow out of the tank.
