7.2.

1 Setting of Overload Relay of 200HP motor

In reference to the Figure 7.2, 200HP,480V,3Ø, motor is among the

highest motor load using VFD as motor controller starter rated at 240
Ampere. Calculation of Long-time delay element of circuit breaker A,
base on the reference: Protection of Electricity Distribution Networks by
J. Gers and E. Holmes, 2004 published IEE London.

ILONGTIME = 105% x FLA(HIGHEST RATED MOTOR)

Therefore by substituting values,

ILONGTIME = 105% x 240 A = 252 Ampere

7.2.2 Setting of Low-Voltage MCCB (Breaker A) “600AT”

Molded case circuit breaker has two elements which are the long-time
delay for small over-current such as overloads and the instantaneous
elements for short-circuits. Also it shall be sized adequately to handle
locked-rotor current during starting. Shown in Figure 7.2 CB “A” is used
for over current protection device for the 200HP motor with code letter
“G” locked-rotor kVA per HP is equivalent of base from PEC 2017 Table
4.30.1.7.(B) Locked-Rotor Indicating Code Letter @ page 345.

a. Setting of Thermal or Long time element of CB “A” means no

short-time element for the 200HP motor.

Calculation the locked rotor current at full voltage, ( ILR@FULL VOLATGE),

6.29kVA
200HP ( )
HP
ILR@FULL VOLATGE = = 1578.93 Amp. (full voltage starting)

Thus, motor controller is a wye-delta starter that reduces the starting

current by ( ) calculated below,

ILR@WYE-DELTA = ILR@FULL VOLATGE X ( )
√3
2

ILR@WYE-DELTA = 1578.93 X ( )
√3
ILR@WYE-DELTA = 526.31 Amp.

b. Setting if instantaneous element of CB “A” calculation is based on the

reference: Protection of Electricity Distribution Networks by J. Gers
and E. Holmes, 2004 published IEE London, the longtime setting is 12
times of its full-load rating. hence,

IINSTANTANOUES CB “A” = 12 X FLA HIGHEST MOTOR RATED

IINSTANTANOUES CB “A” = 12 X 240

IINSTANTANOUES CB “A” = 2880 Amp.

7.2.3 Current Setting of Circuit Breaker B (2500AT) Down-

Stream

From figure 7.1, Long-time, Short-time, and Instantaneous element

are calculated as per below;

a. Long-time element;

ILONG-TIME SETTING CB “B” = ILONG-TIME SETTING CB “A” + All other loads IFLA
ILONG-TIME SETTING CB “B” = 252 + (2079.00 – 240.00)
ILONG-TIME SETTING CB “B” = 2091.00 Amp. – 2000A Set Etap
b. Instantaneous element;

IINSTANTANEOUS SETTING CB “B” = IINSTANTANEOUS SETTING CB “A” +

All other loads IFLA
I INSTANTANEOUS SETTING CB “B” = 2880 + (2079.00 – 240.00)
I INSTANTANEOUS SETTING CB “B” = 4719.00 Amp. – 5000A Set Etap

7.2.4 Current Setting of Circuit Breaker C (2500AT) Up-stream

From figure 7.1, Long-time, Short-time, and Instantaneous element

are calculated as per below;

a. Long-time element;

ILONG-TIME SETTING CB “C” = ILONG-TIME SETTING CB “B” + All other loads IFLA
ILONG-TIME SETTING CB “C” = 2091 + ( 252 + 240.00 )
ILONG-TIME SETTING CB “C” = 2583.00 Amp. -2500A Set Etap

b. Instantaneous element;

IINSTANTANEOUS SETTING CB “C” = IINSTANTANEOUS SETTING CB “A” +

All other loads IFLA
I INSTANTANEOUS SETTING CB “C” = 4719 + ( 252 + 240.00 )
I INSTANTANEOUS SETTING CB “C” = 5211.00 Amp. -7500A Set Etap

7.2.4 Current Setting of Circuit Breaker D (3500AT) LVSG

From figure 7.1, Long-time, Short-time, and Instantaneous element

are calculated as per below;

c. Long-time element;
ILONG-TIME SETTING CB “D” = ILONG-TIME SETTING CB “C” + All other loads IFLA
ILONG-TIME SETTING CB “D” = 2583.00 + (132.00 + 359.30 + 221.43)
ILONG-TIME SETTING CB “D” = 3295.73 Amp. – 3500A Set Etap

d. Instantaneous element;

Setting of circuit breaker “D” shall be higher than the motors

short-circuit contribution from the downstream base from calculation
shown below at 3Ø fault 1. Main LVSG breaker should not trip when
fault current occurs from the motors contribution, thus primary
protection shall trip using overcurrent relay.

I INSTANTANEOUS SETTING CB “D” = 8855.65 Amp. – 9000.00A Set Etap

Zth = 0.0035+0.0134j + 0.0051+0.0512j

+ 0.0014+0.0002j
Zth = 0.0666∠81.23

3Ø Fault @ MDP Terminal;

Where, IFLA TR = 3007.03 Amp.

1∠0
= 3007.03 x
0.0666∠81.23
= 45,150.60 Amp.

Therefore:
Motor SC-CONTR. = Fault 1 - 3Ø Fault @ MDP Terminal
= 54,006.25 – 45,150.60 = 8855.65 Amp.
