AUSTRALIA

Australia is the smallest continent in the world, occupied by a single state,


Australia, or the Commonwealth of Australia official. As a surface, Australia's
world rankings are sixth. Besides the continental territory, Australia includes
several islands, the largest of which is the Tasmanian state island.

Australia was originally used by the English authorities as the place of deportation
of common law detainees.

Relief is predominantly dessert (Great Australian Desert). The mountains in South-


East Australia are generally short, with the highest Australian peak being Mount
Kosciusko in the Australian Alps, with a height of only 2.228 m, less than half the
height of Mont Blanc.

Most of Australia is very droughty. In the summer, which lasts from December to
February, there are frequent heat waves, temperatures generally reach 38
degrees Celsius.

Australia has many unique species of animals and plants: large and small
kangaroo bears, koala bears and marsupial bears. The bearded beak and tepos
are the mammals that deposit eggs (monotren) specific to Australia. The dingo is
a member of the family of dogs and is believed to have been introduced in
Australia some 30,000 years ago.
