Explanations

Section 1:Surveying(COMPULSORY)

Q.1) Explanation:

Characteristics of contour lines are helpful in plotting and interpretation of various features in
the map. These characteristics are as follows :
(a) Contour line is a line joining points of same elevation, hence all points of contour lines have
same elevation. The elevation of a contour is written close to the contour.

Section 2:Surveying(OPTIONAL)

Q.1) Explanation:

(a)Isogonic Lines
If the points on the globe which have same magnetic declination at a point of time are joined,
the imaginary lines so obtained are called isogonic lines.
Agonic Lines
These are imaginary lines constructed by joining the points at which the magnetic declination is
zero, and hence have the same value of magnetic bearing and true bearings. For reference to
geodetic and other important surveys, isogonic charts are published by agencies like Survey of
India, on which isogonic and agonic lines are drawn on earth maps.

Section 4:Surveying(OPTIONAL)

Q.1) Explanation:

(i) Di erence in vernier readings can occur

(a) If the centre of the graduate horizontal circle doesn’t coincide with centre of the  vernier
plate. Reading against either vernier will be incorrect. This can be eliminated by taking average
of two readings.
(b) If there is imperfect graduations of the horizontal scale. This can be minmized by  taking
mean of several readings distributed over di erent portions of the horizontal circle.
(c) If the zeros of the vernier are not at the ends of the same diameter, this can be eliminated by
taking mean of the two readings.
(ii) Face left and face right observations remove errors due to imperfect adjustments of
(a) the horizontal axis or torsion axis not being perpendicular to the vertical axis.
(b) the line of collimation not being perpendicular to the horizontal axis.
(c) the line of collimation not being parallel to the axis of altitude level or telescope level.

An assembly of individual aerial photographs is known as mosaic. Following are

di erences in a mosaic and map:
(a) The scale in a map is uniform throughout and ground objects appear in their azimuth  or
directions, while in a mosaic that is not so because of distortions by tilt and relief.
(b) Since, the detail in a mosaic appears in units natural form, a mosaic is more useful to  a
laymen who is not conversant with map symbols and interpretations.
(c) Spot height, coordinates and other information likes frames are not in a mosaic and hence it
is not suitable for quantitative studies whereas in a map, measurements can be made.
(d) A mosaic can be prepared in much shorter time compared to a map.
(e) A mosaic can be prepared only for at terrain and of vertical photos. It is extremely
di cult to make a mosaic of an oblique photo and also for vertical photo of highly mountainous
terrain because of large scale di erence

Q.3) Explanation:

(a) Roof trusses are subjected to dead load, live load, snow load and wind load. These  are
discussed in detail in the paragraphs to follow:
Dead Loads:The dead loads of the truss include the dead load of roo ng materials,  purlins,
trusses and bracing systems. The unit weight of roo ng materials are  prescribed by IS:
1911.  The weight of purlins is known in advance as these are designed  prior to trusses. The
dead weight of the trusses may be assumed to be equal to  10% of the loads on the truss. A
simple empirical formula for estimation of the approximate dead weight of roof truss in N/m2 is
(span/3 + 5 ) × 10. Some other formulae have also been developed and the designer may choose
any one of them.In any case, the dead load of the truss after the design should not vary by
more than 10%. A rough estimate of the dead weight of the roof truss can be 60% of the dead
weight of a girder subjected to the same design loads, but distributed uniformly. The weight of
the bracing may be assumed to be 12–15 N/m2 of the plan area.
