Blood Physiology
• Carries essential
nourishment to all
tissues and organs,
without it tissues die
of starvation
Blood Physiology
• Blood Volume: 5 to 6
L
• Average person has
25 billion RBC’s
which are
constantly
regenerated in
approximately 120
days
Centrifuged Blood
Sample
Blood “Compartments”
• Solid elements:
– 45% red blood cells
- 1% white blood
cells
- and platelets
• Liquid portion:
– 55% of the total
blood volume is
plasma
Blood Smear
Functions of Red Cells
Red Blood Cells (RBC)
• Red blood cells carry
oxygen
• Red blood cells
transport carbon
dioxide back to the
lungs for expulsion
from the body.
Blood Physiology

• In the womb the

mother’s blood ensures
that the fetus is
supplied with oxygen,
nutrients and built in
defenses against
disease
Hemoglobin
• Hemoglobin needs
to be present in
the red blood cell
for oxygen to be
taken up from the
lungs
• Iron is a essential
for the
manufacture of
hemoglobin
• Lack of Iron – Iron
Red Cell Functions
Red Blood Cells (RBC)
• Red blood cells carry
oxygen
• Red blood cells
transport carbon
dioxide back to the
lungs for expulsion
from the body.
Functions of White Blood
Cells
White Blood Cells
• Defend the body
against infection
• Make antibodies
Platelets (Thrombocytes)

* Cell fragments bound to

megakaryocytes
* “Bud Off” and are released into the
blood
Functions of Platelets
Platelets
• Helps to control
bleeding by
sticking to injured
surfaces of blood
vessels
• Allow clotting
factors to
accumulate at the
injured site
Importance of Plasma
Plasma
• The fluid that carries
all these cells in
suspension
• Other substances
such as proteins,
clotting factors and
chemicals
When you donate blood:
You can help 4 patients
It is now possible to use a single donation to treat
several patients suffering from different illnesses

1 unit of packed red blood

cells
1 unit of whole 1 unit of
blood
FFP
1 unit of
1 unit of platelet cryoppt
concentrate
“Blood Component Therapy”
Therapeutic Use of Blood
• Hemorrhage – through
trauma, the volume of
blood in the body is
reduced to such levels
that it could not be
replaced fast enough by
the body
• Lack of components of
blood such as
hemophilia wherein
clotting does not occur
Therapeutic Use of Blood

• Used in surgery, trauma,

gastrointestinal bleeding and
childbirth to replace major blood
loss
• Genetic disorders of the blood such
as thalassaemia and sickle cell
disease
Key Points
• Blood is essential to life
• Some patients require blood for their
lives to be saved, others to survive and
improve the quality of their lives
• Blood donation is the only option – no
substitute
• Blood cannot be manufactured
THE POTENTIAL DONOR
Age: 16 to 65 years old

Weight: At least 110 lbs (50kgs)

Pulse Rate: Between 60 and 100 beats/min

with a regular rhythm
Blood Pressure: winin normal limis

Hemoglobin: at least 125 g/l

Poor Reasons for
NOT donating BLOOD

(Mga PALUSOT)
“I’m
afraid!!!!!”

“ TAKOT AKO! ”

Everyone’s scared the first time

around but after one donation you
will even wonder why you ever
hesitated.
“ It hurts! ”
“ MASAKIT YATA YAN

You will only feel a slight pinch on your arm
and that’s it.
Approach donating with a positive attitude
and know that you’ve done something
worthwhile.
“ I’m Anemic! ”
“ Anemic ako ”
You don’t really have to worry. You will be
checked before you even donate. If your
hemoglobin is low, you will be temporarily
deferred but you can always come back and try
again.
“My blood is not the right
type!”
“ iba ang blood type ko ”

We will always welcome you. We need

regular donations on all blood types.
“I don’t have enough blood to spare!”
“kulang na nga dugo ko
babawasan ‘nyo pa!”

I f you know you are healthy, weighing at

east 100 pounds then you can be assured
hat it is very safe for you to donate.
“Other people
are giving
enough blood!”

“marami naman dyan

magbibigay, sila na lang”

Unfortunately, this isn’t true. Although 85% of

the adult population is eligible, only about 7%
donate. A sad truth we have to change.
“ I’m afraid of getting AIDS &other diseases!”
“Baka
makak
dyan!” uha pa
ako ng AID
S

There is no way you can be exposed to AIDS by

donating. All needles and other supplies are
sterile and disposable.
“ You don’t want
my blood because
of an illness I had!”

“ ayaw ‘nyo dugo ko dahil

nagkasakit ako dati”
Don’t feel insecure about this. You can discuss
your problems with our very friendly staff.
“ I’m too busy!”
“ Busy ako! ”
This is definitely the poorest excuse of all.
Remember that a little of your time can mean a
lifetime for someone.
