Banning of Fraternities in Colleges

 Fraternity is an organization or brotherhoods that built common goals that make

commitments to each other life. There are many fraternities in the colleges and each

one is dedicated to uphold their existence and honors for their associations. However,

being part of the brotherhood may not be easy, before to become a member it needs to

endure hazing which involves molestation and malicious acts. Aside from this, this may

impact students of their social behavior and social environment. Enforcement of the

colleges to ban the fraternities should be regulated against the hazing initiation

and to prevent the vicious acts of the student.

One of the biggest factors to ban the fraternities is the hazing initiation ceremony

of fraternities which involve of harassment and abusing that may lead to severe injuries

or and death. A year ago, after the Castillo’s death due to alleged hazing injuries, Pres.

Duterte had signed the Anti-Hazing Act of 2018 to stop the violence, abuse and no more

repeat of Castilo’s death due to hazing (Ranada, 2018). But lately, another alleged

hazing happened in a student who had comatose. This reflects that fraternities did not

considerate the anti-hazing law. Even Pres. Duterte says that hazing cannot be

eliminated unless if the fraternities ban for all time (Ranada, 2019).

Another factor to ban the fraternities is students who are part of the association

may have aggressive behavior due to malicious acts in hazing, and this may cause a

satisfactory to hurt people. In the article of Manila Times, there is a UP student who’d

kills self after a leaked videos of allegedly hazing activities circulated in social media

(Jalea, 2019. There is a student who had watched the video, he stated that the frat

members are laughing and enjoying their acts of hazing to the new recruit member

(Stand for Truth, 2019). This proves that joining fraternities may impact student’s
behavior regarding to their society. Possibly affects their emotions and behaviors that

could lead to self-harm. To the contrary, other frat member believes that being part of

the association may help to improve your personal development. According to fraternity

and sorority of University of Rochester, everyone can be a leader they leverage the

strength of their community to reach their common goals and develop their skills

(Fraternity and Sorority Affairs, 2019). Though, there are organizations and clubs that

does not need to take any vicious acts or any initiation rites, but will teach you to

develop yourself and skills.

One more reason to ban the fraternities is the students who are associated in

fraternities may impact of their academic performance. Considering of being part of the

fraternity could cost a big time due to related events in terms of parties, helping

fundraisers or social event that may sacrifice the grades to prioritize the fraternity.

According to The Classroom, students may affect their academic because of fraternity

responsibilities and hard to juggle classes this will pressure the student and sacrifice his

or her grades (Tyler, 2017). In contradiction, according to fraternity and sorority of USC,

being a member of fraternity will enhance the academic experience of the student and

they will provide academic support (USC Fraternity and Sorority, 2019). Even if joining

fraternities will support in your academics you have to consider your priorities. The

reason that this may lose your time to your family and for yourself. Other than that, there

are activities that could change your behavior towards to other people. Particularly in

parties which involved drinking alcohol, smoking or illegal drugs that could limits your

vicious acts. Including initiation rites which involves harassment and abusing that could

exceed your excitement to hurt people.

 Associating in fraternities may help you to develop your skill and may help you to

support in academics. However, there is consequently in joining fraternities on student’s

social behavior and distractions to their studies. To oppose the advantages of joining

fraternities, their hazing initiation which involve of violence and harassment this does

not imply their brotherhood. The fact that hazing does not show the brotherhood, the

unity, dignity and respect because this is merely abuse and pleasure to hurt people. To

eliminate the hazing initiation it should ban the fraternities for all time in colleges

and to cease the violence and behavioral acts of the student.
