Lab 2 Parker’s Training Bench
Start-up/Shutdown/Bench Overview
. This lab introduces the student to the Parker Hydraulic Training Bench. During this lab
the student will practice safe start up and shut down procedures for the training bench
including the use of the PDP, Emergency Stop and Bench’s “On/off” buttons.

Learning Outcomes

At the conclusion of this lab, you will be able to:

• Work in compliance with the Ontario //Health and Safety Act and the College’s
Safety Standards during the performance of the lab exercise
• Work safely in an industrial environment.
• Start-up and Shutdown the Power Distribution Panel applying the universal
practice referred to as the “Left Hand Rule”
• Perform and recover from an Emergency Stop
• Start and Stop the Parker Training Bench using the “On/off” buttons
• Recognize common hydraulic component’s placement on the Parker Training
Bench
• Draw a hydraulic ANSI symbols to represent the hydraulic components found on
the Training Bench

Procedure: Step 1

Using the pictures of the Hydraulic Training Bench’s “Backboard” and “Power Unit” sections
found on the following pages, recognize the hydraulic components mounted on the Parker
Hydraulic Training Bench.

Training Bench’s Power Unit

The components mounted below the benches table top are “hard piped” connections that
remain configured for all circuits. These components as assembled represent a typical
hydraulic power unit used as a source of fluid energy in all future training bench lab
circuits.

Training Bench’s Backboard

The components mounted on the training bench’s “backboard” are used in a variety of
configurations representing many different hydraulic circuits and therefore are connected
in these configurations by flexible hydraulic hoses and quick connect coupling. The ability
to connect and disconnect these components easily allows the benches to be configured
quickly to demonstrate a wide variety of hydraulic circuits.

Procedure: Step 2

Each person in the lab group must perform the startup and shutdown
procedure listed below

1. Ensure that the PDP is in the “Off” position

2. Check to ensure that the Emergency Stop Button is Depressed
3. Using the “Left Hand Rule” turn the PDP switch to the “On” position
4. Release the Emergency Stop Button
5. Depress the Training Bench’s “On” button
6. Depress the Emergency Stop Button
7. Depress the Training Bench’s “On” button
8. Release the Emergency Stop Button
9. Depress the Training Bench’s “On” button
10. Depress the Training Bench’s “Off” button
11. Depress the Emergency Stop Button
12. Turn the PDP switch to the “off| position
13. Ask the instructor to have one member of the group demonstrate Step 2 Procedure

Summary

• The Power Distribution Panel can be safely turn On and Off by following the “Left
Hand Rule”
• The PDP supplies electrical power to the Training Bench.
• The Emergency Stop Button stops all machine motion
• The Training Bench’s On/Off Buttons turns the Training Bench’s prime mover on

Integrate the Concepts

• What is the name of the governing body in Ontario which mandates safe working
conditions in the work place?

Submission Requirements

Each student must submit a technical report as discussed during week 1 report
submission overview

• Tittle Page
• Abstract
• Results: (Using Microsoft word construct a table which contains the data found in
both the power unit and backboard unit’s components)
• Discussion (Choose 5 components identified during this lab and write a sentence
to describe their function in the circuit) (
o Also explore the internet and write a paragraph describing the hazard
associated with “ARC FLASH” from the PDP
• Conclusion: (Write a paragraph describing what you have learned from
performing this lab)
• Autocad schematic of each symbol identified on the training bench’s backboard
or power unit
